Sebastian Kunert df818d2974 Move cumulus zombienet tests to aura & async backing (#3568)
Cumulus test-parachain node and test runtime were still using relay
chain consensus and 12s blocktimes. With async backing around the corner
on the major chains we should switch our tests too.

Also needed to nicely test the changes coming to collators in #3168.

### Changes Overview
- Followed the [migration
guide](https://wiki.polkadot.network/docs/maintain-guides-async-backing)
for async backing for the cumulus-test-runtime
- Adjusted the cumulus-test-service to use the correct import-queue,
lookahead collator etc.
- The block validation function now uses the Aura Ext Executor so that
the seal of the block is validated
- Previous point requires that we seal block before calling into
`validate_block`, I introduced a helper function for that
- Test client adjusted to provide a slot to the relay chain proof and
the aura pre-digest

Facundo Farall 4e73c0fcd3 Upgrade trie-db from 0.28.0 to 0.29.0 (#3982)
# Description
- What does this PR do?
1. Upgrades `trie-db`'s version to the latest release. This release
includes, among others, an implementation of `DoubleEndedIterator` for
the `TrieDB` struct, allowing to iterate both backwards and forwards
within the leaves of a trie.
2. Upgrades `trie-bench` to `0.39.0` for compatibility.
3. Upgrades `criterion` to `0.5.1` for compatibility.
- Why are these changes needed?
Besides keeping up with the upgrade of `trie-db`, this specifically adds
the functionality of iterating back on the leafs of a trie, with
`sp-trie`. In a project we're currently working on, this comes very
handy to verify a Merkle proof that is the response to a challenge. The
challenge is a random hash that (most likely) will not be an existing
leaf in the trie. So the challenged user, has to provide a Merkle proof
of the previous and next existing leafs in the trie, that surround the
random challenged hash.

Without having DoubleEnded iterators, we're forced to iterate until we
find the first existing leaf, like so:
```rust
        // ************* VERIFIER (RUNTIME) *************
        // Verify proof. This generates a partial trie based on the proof and
        // checks that the root hash matches the `expected_root`.
        let (memdb, root) = proof.to_memory_db(Some(&root)).unwrap();
        let trie = TrieDBBuilder::<LayoutV1<RefHasher>>::new(&memdb, &root).build();
        // Print all leaf node keys and values.
        println!("\nPrinting leaf nodes of partial tree...");
        for key in trie.key_iter().unwrap() {
            if key.is_ok() {
                println!("Leaf node key: {:?}", key.clone().unwrap());
                let val = trie.get(&key.unwrap());
                if val.is_ok() {
                    println!("Leaf node value: {:?}", val.unwrap());
                } else {
                    println!("Leaf node value: None");
                }
            }
        }
        println!("RECONSTRUCTED TRIE {:#?}", trie);
        // Create an iterator over the leaf nodes.
        let mut iter = trie.iter().unwrap();
        // First element with a value should be the previous existing leaf to the challenged hash.
        let mut prev_key = None;
        for element in &mut iter {
            if element.is_ok() {
                let (key, _) = element.unwrap();
                prev_key = Some(key);
                break;
            }
        }
        assert!(prev_key.is_some());
        // Since hashes are `Vec<u8>` ordered in big-endian, we can compare them directly.
        assert!(prev_key.unwrap() <= challenge_hash.to_vec());
        // The next element should exist (meaning there is no other existing leaf between the
        // previous and next leaf) and it should be greater than the challenged hash.
        let next_key = iter.next().unwrap().unwrap().0;
        assert!(next_key >= challenge_hash.to_vec());
```

With DoubleEnded iterators, we can avoid that, like this:
```rust
        // ************* VERIFIER (RUNTIME) *************
        // Verify proof. This generates a partial trie based on the proof and
        // checks that the root hash matches the `expected_root`.
        let (memdb, root) = proof.to_memory_db(Some(&root)).unwrap();
        let trie = TrieDBBuilder::<LayoutV1<RefHasher>>::new(&memdb, &root).build();
        // Print all leaf node keys and values.
        println!("\nPrinting leaf nodes of partial tree...");
        for key in trie.key_iter().unwrap() {
            if key.is_ok() {
                println!("Leaf node key: {:?}", key.clone().unwrap());
                let val = trie.get(&key.unwrap());
                if val.is_ok() {
                    println!("Leaf node value: {:?}", val.unwrap());
                } else {
                    println!("Leaf node value: None");
                }
            }
        }
        // println!("RECONSTRUCTED TRIE {:#?}", trie);
        println!("\nChallenged key: {:?}", challenge_hash);
        // Create an iterator over the leaf nodes.
        let mut double_ended_iter = trie.into_double_ended_iter().unwrap();
        // First element with a value should be the previous existing leaf to the challenged hash.
        double_ended_iter.seek(&challenge_hash.to_vec()).unwrap();
        let next_key = double_ended_iter.next_back().unwrap().unwrap().0;
        let prev_key = double_ended_iter.next_back().unwrap().unwrap().0;
        // Since hashes are `Vec<u8>` ordered in big-endian, we can compare them directly.
        println!("Prev key: {:?}", prev_key);
        assert!(prev_key <= challenge_hash.to_vec());
        println!("Next key: {:?}", next_key);
        assert!(next_key >= challenge_hash.to_vec());
```
- How were these changes implemented and what do they affect?
All that is needed for this functionality to be exposed is changing the
version number of `trie-db` in all the `Cargo.toml`s applicable, and
re-exporting some additional structs from `trie-db` in `sp-trie`.

Dastan e54279699b migrations: prevent accidentally using unversioned migrations instead of VersionedMigration (#3835)
closes #1324

#### Problem
Currently, it is possible to accidentally use inner unversioned
migration instead of `VersionedMigration` since both implement
`OnRuntimeUpgrade`.

#### Solution

With this change, we make it clear that value of `Inner` is not intended
to be used directly. It is achieved by bounding `Inner` to new trait
`UncheckedOnRuntimeUpgrade`, which has the same interface (except
`unchecked_` prefix) as `OnRuntimeUpgrade`.

#### `try-runtime` functions

Since developers can implement `try-runtime` for `Inner` value in
`VersionedMigration` and have custom logic for it, I added the same
`try-runtime` functions to `UncheckedOnRuntimeUpgrade`. I looked for a
ways to not duplicate functions, but couldn't find anything that doesn't
significantly change the codebase. So I would appreciate If you have any
suggestions to improve this

Juan Ignacio Rios 8b3bf39ab8 Add HRMP notification handlers to the xcm-executor (#3696)
Currently the xcm-executor returns an `Unimplemented` error if it
receives any HRMP-related instruction.
What I propose here, which is what we are currently doing in our forked
executor at polimec, is to introduce a trait implemented by the executor
which will handle those instructions.

This way, if parachains want to keep the default behavior, they just use
`()` and it will return unimplemented, but they can also implement their
own logic to establish HRMP channels with other chains in an automated
fashion, without requiring to go through governance.

Our implementation is mentioned in the [polkadot HRMP
docs](https://arc.net/l/quote/hduiivbu), and it was suggested to us to
submit a PR to add these changes to polkadot-sdk.

- Adds a new example pallet `pallet-example-single-block-migrations`
- Adds a new reference doc to replace

- Adds documentation for the `storage_alias` macro
- Improves `trait Hooks` docs
- Improves `trait GetStorageVersion` docs
- Update the suggested patterns for using `VersionedMigration`, so that
version unchecked migrations are never exported
- Prevents accidental usage of version unchecked migrations in runtimes

https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/pull/14421#discussion_r1255467895
- Unversioned migration code is kept inside `mod version_unchecked`,
versioned code is kept in `pub mod versioned`
- It is necessary to use modules to limit visibility because the inner
migration must be `pub`. See

Branislav Kontur 3d9439f646 [pallet-xcm] Adjust benchmarks (teleport_assets/reserve_transfer_assets) not relying on ED (#3464)
## Problem
During the bumping of the `polkadot-fellows` repository to
`polkadot-sdk@1.6.0`, I encountered a situation where the benchmarks
`teleport_assets` and `reserve_transfer_assets` in AssetHubKusama
started to fail. This issue arose due to a decreased ED balance for
AssetHubs introduced
[here](https://github.com/polkadot-fellows/runtimes/pull/158/files#diff-80668ff8e793b64f36a9a3ec512df5cbca4ad448c157a5d81abda1b15f35f1daR213),
and also because of a [missing CI
pipeline](https://github.com/polkadot-fellows/runtimes/issues/197) to
check the benchmarks, which went unnoticed.

These benchmarks expect the `caller` to have enough:
1. balance to transfer (BTT)
2. balance for paying delivery (BFPD).

So the initial balance was calculated as `ED * 100`, which seems
reasonable:
```
const ED_MULTIPLIER: u32 = 100;
let balance = existential_deposit.saturating_mul(ED_MULTIPLIER.into());`
```
The problem arises when the price for delivery is 100 times higher than
the existential deposit. In other words, when `ED * 100` does not cover
`BTT` + `BFPD`.

I check AHR/AHW/AHK/AHP and this problem has only AssetHubKusama
```
ED: 3333333
calculated price to parent delivery:  1031666634  (from xcm logs from the benchmark)
---
3333333 * 100 - BTT(3333333) - BFPD(1031666634) = −701666667
```
which results in the error;
```
2024-02-23 09:19:42 Unable to charge fee with error Module(ModuleError { index: 31, error: [17, 0, 0, 0], message: Some("FeesNotMet") })
Error: Input("Benchmark pallet_xcm::reserve_transfer_assets failed: FeesNotMet")
```

## Solution

The benchmarks `teleport_assets` and `reserve_transfer_assets` were
fixed by removing `ED * 100` and replacing it with `DeliveryHelper`
logic, which calculates the (almost real) price for delivery and sets it
along with the existential deposit as the initial balance for the
account used in the benchmark.

Sebastian Kunert 3386377b0f PoV Reclaim Runtime Side (#3002)
# Runtime side for PoV Reclaim

## Implementation Overview
- Hostfunction to fetch the storage proof size has been added to the
PVF. It uses the size tracking recorder that was introduced in my
previous PR.
- Mechanisms to use the reclaim HostFunction have been introduced.
- 1. A SignedExtension that checks the node-reported proof size before
and after application of an extrinsic. Then it reclaims the difference.
- 2. A manual helper to make reclaiming easier when manual interaction
is required, for example in `on_idle` or other hooks.
- In order to utilize the manual reclaiming, I modified `WeightMeter` to
support the reduction of consumed weight, at least for storage proof
size.

## How to use
To enable the general functionality for a parachain:
1. Add the SignedExtension to your parachain runtime.
2. Provide the HostFunction to the node
3. Enable proof recording during block import

Branislav Kontur e0c902e3df [xcm-builder] Replaced deprecated CurrencyAdapter with FungibleAdapter (#3287)
I found out during the cleanup of this deprecation message in the
`polkadot-fellows` repository that we deprecated `CurrencyAdapter`
without making the recommended changes.

Oliver Tale-Yazdi e80c24733f Lift dependencies to the workspace (Part 1) (#2070)
Changes (partial https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/994):
- Set log to `0.4.20` everywhere
- Lift `log` to the workspace

Starting with a simpler one after seeing
https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/2065 from @jsdw.
This sets the `default-features` to `false` in the root and then
overwrites that in each create to its original value. This is necessary
since otherwise the `default` features are additive and its impossible
to disable them in the crate again once they are enabled in the
workspace.

I am using a tool to do this, so its mostly a test to see that it works
as expected.

Branislav Kontur bb8ddc46c1 [frame] #[pallet::composite_enum] improved variant count handling + removed pallet_balances's MaxHolds config (#2657)
I started this investigation/issue based on @liamaharon question
[here](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/1801#discussion_r1410452499).

## Problem

The `pallet_balances` integrity test should correctly detect that the
runtime has correct distinct `HoldReasons` variant count. I assume the
same situation exists for RuntimeFreezeReason.

It is not a critical problem, if we set `MaxHolds` with a sufficiently
large value, everything should be ok. However, in this case, the
integrity_test check becomes less useful.

**Situation for "any" runtime:**
- `HoldReason` enums from different pallets:
```rust
        /// from pallet_nis
        #[pallet::composite_enum]
	pub enum HoldReason {
		NftReceipt,
	}
        /// from pallet_preimage
        #[pallet::composite_enum]
	pub enum HoldReason {
		Preimage,
	}
        // from pallet_state-trie-migration
        #[pallet::composite_enum]
	pub enum HoldReason {
		SlashForContinueMigrate,
		SlashForMigrateCustomTop,
		SlashForMigrateCustomChild,
	}
```

- generated `RuntimeHoldReason` enum looks like:
```rust
pub enum RuntimeHoldReason {
    #[codec(index = 32u8)]
    Preimage(pallet_preimage::HoldReason),
    #[codec(index = 38u8)]
    Nis(pallet_nis::HoldReason),
    #[codec(index = 42u8)]
    StateTrieMigration(pallet_state_trie_migration::HoldReason),
}
```

- composite enum `RuntimeHoldReason` variant count is detected as `3`
- we set `type MaxHolds = ConstU32<3>`
- `pallet_balances::integrity_test` is ok with `3`(at least 3)

However, the real problem can occur in a live runtime where some
functionality might stop working. This is due to a total of 5 distinct
hold reasons (for pallets with multi-instance support, it is even more),
and not all of them can be used because of an incorrect `MaxHolds`,
which is deemed acceptable according to the `integrity_test`:
  ```
  // pseudo-code - if we try to call all of these:
T::Currency::hold(&pallet_nis::HoldReason::NftReceipt.into(),
&nft_owner, deposit)?;
T::Currency::hold(&pallet_preimage::HoldReason::Preimage.into(),
&nft_owner, deposit)?;
T::Currency::hold(&pallet_state_trie_migration::HoldReason::SlashForContinueMigrate.into(),
&nft_owner, deposit)?;
  // With `type MaxHolds = ConstU32<3>` these two will fail
T::Currency::hold(&pallet_state_trie_migration::HoldReason::SlashForMigrateCustomTop.into(),
&nft_owner, deposit)?;
T::Currency::hold(&pallet_state_trie_migration::HoldReason::SlashForMigrateCustomChild.into(),
&nft_owner, deposit)?;
  ```

## Solutions

A macro `#[pallet::*]` expansion is extended of `VariantCount`
implementation for the `#[pallet::composite_enum]` enum type. This
expansion generates the `VariantCount` implementation for pallets'
`HoldReason`, `FreezeReason`, `LockId`, and `SlashReason`. Enum variants
must be plain enum values without fields to ensure a deterministic
count.

The composite runtime enum, `RuntimeHoldReason` and
`RuntimeFreezeReason`, now sets `VariantCount::VARIANT_COUNT` as the sum
of pallets' enum `VariantCount::VARIANT_COUNT`:
```rust
#[frame_support::pallet(dev_mode)]
mod module_single_instance {
	#[pallet::composite_enum]
	pub enum HoldReason {
		ModuleSingleInstanceReason1,
		ModuleSingleInstanceReason2,
	}
...
}
#[frame_support::pallet(dev_mode)]
mod module_multi_instance {
	#[pallet::composite_enum]
	pub enum HoldReason<I: 'static = ()> {
		ModuleMultiInstanceReason1,
		ModuleMultiInstanceReason2,
		ModuleMultiInstanceReason3,
	}
...
}
impl self::sp_api_hidden_includes_construct_runtime::hidden_include::traits::VariantCount
    for RuntimeHoldReason
{
    const VARIANT_COUNT: u32 = 0
        + module_single_instance::HoldReason::VARIANT_COUNT
        + module_multi_instance::HoldReason::<module_multi_instance::Instance1>::VARIANT_COUNT
        + module_multi_instance::HoldReason::<module_multi_instance::Instance2>::VARIANT_COUNT
        + module_multi_instance::HoldReason::<module_multi_instance::Instance3>::VARIANT_COUNT;
}
```

In addition, `MaxHolds` is removed (as suggested
[here](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/2657#discussion_r1443324573))
from `pallet_balances`, and its `Holds` are now bounded to
`RuntimeHoldReason::VARIANT_COUNT`. Therefore, there is no need to let
the runtime specify `MaxHolds`.

Oliver Tale-Yazdi fafe2722a1 Revert "[Runtime] Bound XCMP queue" (#3117)
Reverts paritytech/polkadot-sdk#2302. 🤦‍♂️ should have checked the
migration CI first.

We either need to reduce the `max_message_size` for the open HRMP
channels on the failing chains or increase the `PageSize` of the XCMP
queue.
Both would be fine on a test-net, but i assume this will also fail
before the next SP runtime upgrade so first need to think what best to
do.
AFAIK its not possible currently to change the `max_message_size` of an
open HRMP channel.

Oliver Tale-Yazdi b8f55d1b76 [Runtime] Bound XCMP queue (#2302)
Remove `without_storage_info` from the XCMP queue pallet. Part of
https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/323

Changes:
- Limit the number of channels that can be suspended at the same time.
- Limit the number of channels that can have messages or signals pending
at the same time.

A No-OP migration is put in place to ensure that all `BoundedVec`s still
decode and not truncate after upgrade. The storage version is thereby
bumped to 4 to have our tooling remind us to deploy that migration.

Just van Stam 50eb12cf2f Transactional processing for XCM (#1222)
Moved from: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot/pull/6951

closes https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/490

- [x] update cumulus

---
This PR introduces transactional processing of certain xcm instructions.
For the list of instructions checkout
https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/490. The transactional
processing is implemented as an xcm-executor config item. The two
implementations in this PR are `FrameTransactionalProcessor` and `()`.
The `()` implementation does no transactional processing. Each
implementation of the `ProcessTransaction` trait has an
`IS_TRANSACTIONAL` const that tells the XCVM if transactional processing
is actually implemented. If Transactional processing is implemented,
changes to touched registers should also be rolled back to prevent
inconsistencies.

Davide Galassi 4c10fd2a41 Move cryptographic hashing procedures to crypto folder. (#2306)
Step towards https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/1975

As reported
https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/1975#issuecomment-1774534225
I'd like to encapsulate crypto related stuff in a dedicated folder.

Currently all cryptographic primitive wrappers are all sparsed in
`substrate/core` which contains "misc core" stuff.

To simplify the process, as the first step with this PR I propose to
move the cryptographic hashing there.

The `substrate/crypto` folder was already created to contains `ec-utils`
crate.

Notes:
- rename `sp-core-hashing` to `sp-crypto-hashing`
- rename `sp-core-hashing-proc-macro` to `sp-crypto-hashing-proc-macro`
- As the crates name is changed I took the freedom to restart fresh from
version 0.1.0 for both crates

Francisco Aguirre 8428f678fe XCMv4 (#1230)
# Note for reviewer

Most changes are just syntax changes necessary for the new version.
Most important files should be the ones under the `xcm` folder.

# Description

Added XCMv4.

## Removed `Multi` prefix
The following types have been renamed:
- MultiLocation -> Location
- MultiAsset -> Asset
- MultiAssets -> Assets
- InteriorMultiLocation -> InteriorLocation
- MultiAssetFilter -> AssetFilter
- VersionedMultiAsset -> VersionedAsset
- WildMultiAsset -> WildAsset
- VersionedMultiLocation -> VersionedLocation

In order to fix a name conflict, the `Assets` in `xcm-executor` were
renamed to `HoldingAssets`, as they represent assets in holding.

## Removed `Abstract` asset id

It was not being used anywhere and this simplifies the code.

Now assets are just constructed as follows:

```rust
let asset: Asset = (AssetId(Location::new(1, Here)), 100u128).into();
```

No need for specifying `Concrete` anymore.

## Outcome is now a named fields struct

Instead of

```rust
pub enum Outcome {
  Complete(Weight),
  Incomplete(Weight, Error),
  Error(Error),
}
```

we now have

```rust
pub enum Outcome {
  Complete { used: Weight },
  Incomplete { used: Weight, error: Error },
  Error { error: Error },
}
```

## Added Reanchorable trait

Now both locations and assets implement this trait, making it easier to
reanchor both.

## New syntax for building locations and junctions

Now junctions are built using the following methods:

```rust
let location = Location {
    parents: 1,
    interior: [Parachain(1000), PalletInstance(50), GeneralIndex(1984)].into()
};
```

or

```rust
let location = Location::new(1, [Parachain(1000), PalletInstance(50), GeneralIndex(1984)]);
```

And they are matched like so:

```rust
match location.unpack() {
  (1, [Parachain(id)]) => ...
  (0, Here) => ...,
  (1, [_]) => ...,
}
```

This syntax is mandatory in v4, and has been also implemented for v2 and
v3 for easier migration.

This was needed to make all sizes smaller.

# TODO
- [x] Scaffold v4
- [x] Port github.com/paritytech/polkadot/pull/7236
- [x] Remove `Multi` prefix
- [x] Remove `Abstract` asset id

Dónal Murray d68868f64a Fix clippy lints behind feature gates and add new CI step all features (#2569)
Many clippy lints usually enforced by `-Dcomplexity` and `-Dcorrectness`
are not caught by CI as they are gated by `features`, like
`runtime-benchmarks`, while the clippy CI job runs with only the default
features for all targets.

This PR also adds a CI step to run clippy with `--all-features` to
ensure the code quality is maintained behind feature gates from now on.

To improve local development, clippy lints are downgraded to warnings,
but they still will result in an error at CI due to the `-Dwarnings`
rustflag.

joe petrowski 280aa0b573 Add Authorize Upgrade Pattern to Frame System (#2682)
Adds the `authorize_upgrade` -> `enact_authorized_upgrade` pattern to
`frame-system`. This will be useful for upgrading bridged chains that
are under the governance of Polkadot without passing entire runtime Wasm
blobs over a bridge.

Notes:

- Changed `enact_authorized_upgrade` to `apply_authorized_upgrade`.
Personal opinion, "apply" more accurately expresses what it's doing. Can
change back if outvoted.
- Remove `check_version` in favor of two extrinsics, so as to make
_checked_ the default.
- Left calls in `parachain-system` and marked as deprecated to prevent
breaking the API. They just call into the `frame-system` functions.
- Updated `frame-system` benchmarks to v2 syntax.

Francisco Aguirre 10a91f821e Add FungibleAdapter (#2684)
In the move from the old `Currency` traits to the new `fungible/s`
family of traits, we already had the `FungiblesAdapter` and
`NonFungiblesAdapter` for multiple fungible and non fungible assets
respectively. However, for handling only one fungible asset, we were
missing a `FungibleAdapter`, and so used the old `CurrencyAdapter`
instead. This PR aims to fill in that gap, and provide the new adapter
for more updated examples.

I marked the old `CurrencyAdapter` as deprecated as part of this PR, and
I'll change it to the new `FungibleAdapter` in a following PR.
The two stages are separated so as to not bloat this PR with some name
fixes in tests.

Squirrel be8e626806 Set clippy lints in workspace (requires rust 1.74) (#2390)
We currently use a bit of a hack in `.cargo/config` to make sure that
clippy isn't too annoying by specifying the list of lints.

There is now a stable way to define lints for a workspace. The only down
side is that every crate seems to have to opt into this so there's a
*few* files modified in this PR.

Dependencies:

- [x] PR that upgrades CI to use rust 1.74 is merged.

Oliver Tale-Yazdi 7e7fe99047 [FRAME] Make MQ pallet re-entrancy safe (#2356)
Closes https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/2319

Changes:
- Ensure that only `enqueue_message(s)` is callable from within the
message processor. This prevents messed up storage that can currently
happen when the pallet is called into recursively.
- Use `H256` instead of `[u8; 32]` for clearer API.

## Details

The re-entracy check is done with the `environmental` crate by adding a
`with_service_mutex(f)` function that runs the closure exclusively. This
works since the MQ pallet is not instantiable.
