Move cumulus zombienet tests to aura & async backing (#3568)
Cumulus test-parachain node and test runtime were still using relay chain consensus and 12s blocktimes. With async backing around the corner on the major chains we should switch our tests too. Also needed to nicely test the changes coming to collators in #3168. ### Changes Overview - Followed the [migration guide](https://wiki.polkadot.network/docs/maintain-guides-async-backing) for async backing for the cumulus-test-runtime - Adjusted the cumulus-test-service to use the correct import-queue, lookahead collator etc. - The block validation function now uses the Aura Ext Executor so that the seal of the block is validated - Previous point requires that we seal block before calling into `validate_block`, I introduced a helper function for that - Test client adjusted to provide a slot to the relay chain proof and the aura pre-digest |

Upgrade trie-db from 0.28.0 to 0.29.0 (#3982)
# Description
- What does this PR do?
1. Upgrades `trie-db`'s version to the latest release. This release
includes, among others, an implementation of `DoubleEndedIterator` for
the `TrieDB` struct, allowing to iterate both backwards and forwards
within the leaves of a trie.
2. Upgrades `trie-bench` to `0.39.0` for compatibility.
3. Upgrades `criterion` to `0.5.1` for compatibility.
- Why are these changes needed?
Besides keeping up with the upgrade of `trie-db`, this specifically adds
the functionality of iterating back on the leafs of a trie, with
`sp-trie`. In a project we're currently working on, this comes very
handy to verify a Merkle proof that is the response to a challenge. The
challenge is a random hash that (most likely) will not be an existing
leaf in the trie. So the challenged user, has to provide a Merkle proof
of the previous and next existing leafs in the trie, that surround the
random challenged hash.
Without having DoubleEnded iterators, we're forced to iterate until we
find the first existing leaf, like so:

- How were these changes implemented and what do they affect?
All that is needed for this functionality to be exposed is changing the
version number of `trie-db` in all the `Cargo.toml`s applicable, and
re-exporting some additional structs from `trie-db` in `sp-trie`.

[pallet-xcm] Adjust benchmarks (teleport_assets/reserve_transfer_assets) not relying on ED (#3464)
## Problem During the bumping of the `polkadot-fellows` repository to `polkadot-sdk@1.6.0`, I encountered a situation where the benchmarks `teleport_assets` and `reserve_transfer_assets` in AssetHubKusama started to fail. This issue arose due to a decreased ED balance for AssetHubs introduced [here](https://github.com/polkadot-fellows/runtimes/pull/158/files#diff-80668ff8e793b64f36a9a3ec512df5cbca4ad448c157a5d81abda1b15f35f1daR213), and also because of a [missing CI pipeline](https://github.com/polkadot-fellows/runtimes/issues/197) to check the benchmarks, which went unnoticed. These benchmarks expect the `caller` to have enough: 1. balance to transfer (BTT) 2. balance for paying delivery (BFPD). So the initial balance was calculated as `ED * 100`, which seems reasonable: ``` const ED_MULTIPLIER: u32 = 100; let balance = existential_deposit.saturating_mul(ED_MULTIPLIER.into());` ``` The problem arises when the price for delivery is 100 times higher than the existential deposit. In other words, when `ED * 100` does not cover `BTT` + `BFPD`. I check AHR/AHW/AHK/AHP and this problem has only AssetHubKusama ``` ED: 3333333 calculated price to parent delivery: 1031666634 (from xcm logs from the benchmark) --- 3333333 * 100 - BTT(3333333) - BFPD(1031666634) = −701666667 ``` which results in the error; ``` 2024-02-23 09:19:42 Unable to charge fee with error Module(ModuleError { index: 31, error: [17, 0, 0, 0], message: Some("FeesNotMet") }) Error: Input("Benchmark pallet_xcm::reserve_transfer_assets failed: FeesNotMet") ``` ## Solution The benchmarks `teleport_assets` and `reserve_transfer_assets` were fixed by removing `ED * 100` and replacing it with `DeliveryHelper` logic, which calculates the (almost real) price for delivery and sets it along with the existential deposit as the initial balance for the account used in the benchmark. ## TODO - [ ] patch for 1.6 - https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/3466 - [ ] patch for 1.7 - https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/3465 - [ ] patch for 1.8 - TODO: PR --------- Co-authored-by: Francisco Aguirre <franciscoaguirreperez@gmail.com> |

PoV Reclaim Runtime Side (#3002)
# Runtime side for PoV Reclaim ## Implementation Overview - Hostfunction to fetch the storage proof size has been added to the PVF. It uses the size tracking recorder that was introduced in my previous PR. - Mechanisms to use the reclaim HostFunction have been introduced. - 1. A SignedExtension that checks the node-reported proof size before and after application of an extrinsic. Then it reclaims the difference. - 2. A manual helper to make reclaiming easier when manual interaction is required, for example in `on_idle` or other hooks. - In order to utilize the manual reclaiming, I modified `WeightMeter` to support the reduction of consumed weight, at least for storage proof size. ## How to use To enable the general functionality for a parachain: 1. Add the SignedExtension to your parachain runtime. 2. Provide the HostFunction to the node 3. Lift dependencies to the workspace (Part 1) (#2070)
Changes (partial https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/994): - Set log to `0.4.20` everywhere - Lift `log` to the workspace Starting with a simpler one after seeing https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/2065 from @jsdw. This sets the `default-features` to `false` in the root and then overwrites that in each create to its original value. This is necessary since otherwise the `default` features are additive and its impossible to disable them in the crate again once they are enabled in the workspace. Revert "[Runtime] Bound XCMP queue" (#3117)
Reverts paritytech/polkadot-sdk#2302. 🤦♂️ should have checked the migration CI first. We either need to reduce the `max_message_size` for the open HRMP channels on the failing chains or increase the `PageSize` of the XCMP queue. Both would be fine on a test-net, but i assume this will also fail before the next SP runtime upgrade so first need to think what best to do. AFAIK its not possible currently to change the `max_message_size` of an open HRMP channel. |

[Runtime] Bound XCMP queue (#2302)
Remove `without_storage_info` from the XCMP queue pallet. Part of https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/323 Changes: - Limit the number of channels that can be suspended at the same time. - Limit the number of channels that can have messages or signals pending at the same time. A No-OP migration is put in place to ensure that all `BoundedVec`s still decode and not truncate after upgrade. Move cryptographic hashing procedures to crypto folder. (#2306)
Step towards https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/1975 As reported https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/1975#issuecomment-1774534225 I'd like to encapsulate crypto related stuff in a dedicated folder. Currently all cryptographic primitive wrappers are all sparsed in `substrate/core` which contains "misc core" stuff. To simplify the process, as the first step with this PR I propose to move the cryptographic hashing there. The `substrate/crypto` folder was already created to contains `ec-utils` crate. Notes: - rename `sp-core-hashing` to `sp-crypto-hashing` - rename `sp-core-hashing-proc-macro` to `sp-crypto-hashing-proc-macro` - As the crates name is changed I took the freedom to restart fresh from version 0.1.0 for both crates --------- Co-authored-by: Robert Hambrock <roberthambrock@gmail.com> |

Add Authorize Upgrade Pattern to Frame System (#2682)
Adds the `authorize_upgrade` -> `enact_authorized_upgrade` pattern to `frame-system`. This will be useful for upgrading bridged chains that are under the governance of Polkadot without passing entire runtime Wasm blobs over a bridge. Notes: - Changed `enact_authorized_upgrade` to `apply_authorized_upgrade`. Personal opinion, "apply" more accurately expresses what it's doing. Can change back if outvoted. - Remove `check_version` in favor of two extrinsics, so as to make _checked_ the default. - Left calls in `parachain-system` and marked as deprecated to prevent breaking the API. Set clippy lints in workspace (requires rust 1.74) (#2390)
We currently use a bit of a hack in `.cargo/config` to make sure that clippy isn't too annoying by specifying the list of lints. There is now a stable way to define lints for a workspace. The only down side is that every crate seems to have to opt into this so there's a *few* files modified in this PR. Enforce consistent and correct toml formatting (#2518)
Using taplo, fixes all our broken and inconsistent toml formatting and adds CI to keep them tidy. If people want we can customise the format rules as described here https://taplo.tamasfe.dev/configuration/formatter-options.html @ggwpez, I suggest zepter is used only for checking features are propagated, and leave formatting for taplo to avoid duplicate work and conflicts. PoV Reclaim (Clawback) Node Side (#1462)
This PR provides the infrastructure for the pov-reclaim mechanism discussed in #209. The goal is to provide the current proof size to the runtime so it can be used to reclaim storage weight. ## New Host Function - A new host function is provided [here](https://github.com/skunert/polkadot-sdk/blob/5b317fda3be205f4136f10d4490387ccd4f9765d/cumulus/primitives/pov-reclaim/src/lib.rs#L23). It returns the size of the current proof size to the runtime. If recording is not enabled, it returns 0. ## Implementation Overview - Implement option to enable proof recording during import in the client. This is currently enabled for `polkadot-parachain`, `parachain-template` and the cumulus test node. - Make the proof recorder ready for no-std. It was previously only enabled for std environments, but we need to record the proof size in `validate_block` too. - Provide a recorder implementation that only the records the size of incoming nodes and does not store the nodes itself. - Fix benchmarks that were broken by async backing changes - Provide new externalities extension that is registered by default if proof recording is enabled. - I think we should discuss the naming, pov-reclaim was more intuitive to me, but we could also go with clawback like in the issue. ## Impact of proof recording during import With proof recording: 6.3058 Kelem/s Without proof recording: 6.3427 Kelem/s The measured impact on the importing performance is quite low on my machine using the block import benchmark. validate-block: Fix TrieCache implementation (#2214)
The trie cache implementation was ignoring the `storage_root` when setting up the value cache. The problem with this is that the value cache works using `storage_keys` and these keys are not unique across different tries. A block can actually have different tries (main trie and multiple child tries). This pull request fixes the issue by not ignoring the `storage_root` and returning an unique `value_cache` per `storage_root`. It also adds a test for the seen bug and improves documentation that this doesn't happen again. |

Use Message Queue as DMP and XCMP dispatch queue (#1246)
(imported from https://github.com/paritytech/cumulus/pull/2157) ## Changes This MR refactores the XCMP, Parachains System and DMP pallets to use the [MessageQueue](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/pull/12485) for delayed execution of incoming messages. The DMP pallet is entirely replaced by the MQ and thereby removed. This allows for PoV-bounded execution and resolves a number of issues that stem from the current work-around. All System Parachains adopt this change. The most important changes are in `primitives/core/src/lib.rs`, `parachains/common/src/process_xcm_message.rs`, `pallets/parachain-system/src/lib.rs`, `pallets/xcmp-queue/src/lib.rs` and the runtime configs. ### DMP Queue Pallet The pallet got removed and its logic refactored into parachain-system. Overweight message management can be done directly through the MQ pallet. Now only sends the most recent channel `Signals`, as all prio ones are out-dated anyway. ### Parachain System pallet For `DMP` messages instead of forwarding them to the `DMP` pallet, it now pushes them to the configured `DmpQueue`. The message processing which was triggered in `set_validation_data` is now being done by the MQ pallet `on_initialize`. XCMP messages are still handed off to the `XcmpMessageHandler` (XCMP-Queue pallet) - no change here. Messages come in from the left via the `Validation Data` and finally end up at the `Xcm Executor` on the right.  ## Further changes - Bumped the default suspension, drop and resume thresholds in `QueueConfigData::default()`. - `XcmpQueue::{suspend_xcm_execution, resume_xcm_execution}` errors when they would be a noop. - Properly validate the `QueueConfigData` before setting it. - Marked weight files as auto-generated so they wont auto-expand in the MR files view. - Move the `hypothetical` asserts to `frame_support` under the name `experimental_hypothetically` Questions: - [ ] What about the ugly `#[cfg(feature = \"runtime-benchmarks\")]` in the runtimes? Not sure how to best fix. Just having them like this makes tests fail that rely on the real message processor when the feature is enabled. - [ ] Need a good weight for `MessageQueueServiceWeight`. The scheduler already takes 80% so I put it to 10% but that is quite low. Improve features dev-ex (#1831)
Adds a config file that allows to run `zepter` without any arguments in the workspace to address all issues. A secondary workflow for the CI is provided as `zepter run check`. Both the formatting and linting are now in one check for efficiancy. The latest version also detects some more things that `featalign` was already showing. Error message [in the CI](https://gitlab.parity.io/parity/mirrors/polkadot-sdk/-/jobs/3916205) now looks like this: ```pre ... crate 'test-parachains' (/Users/vados/Documents/work/polkadot-sdk/polkadot/parachain/test-parachains/Cargo.toml) feature 'std' must propagate to: parity-scale-codec Found 55 issues (run with --fix to fix). xcm: Change TypeInfo::path to not include staging (#1948)
The `xcm` crate was renamed to `staging-xcm` to be able to publish it to crates.io as someone as squatted `xcm`. The problem with this rename is that the `TypeInfo` includes the crate name which ultimately lands in the metadata. The metadata is consumed by downstream users like `polkadot-js` or people building on top of `polkadot-js`. These people are using the entire `path` to find the type in the type registry. Thus, their code would break as the type path would now be [`staging_xcm`, `VersionedXcm`] instead of [`xcm`, `VersionedXcm`]. This pull request fixes this by renaming the path segment `staging_xcm` to `xcm`. Introduce XcmFeesToAccount fee manager (#1234)
Combination of paritytech/polkadot#7005, its addon PR paritytech/polkadot#7585 and its companion paritytech/cumulus#2433. This PR introduces a new XcmFeesToAccount struct which implements the `FeeManager` trait, and assigns this struct as the `FeeManager` in the XCM config for all runtimes. The struct simply deposits all fees handled by the XCM executor to a specified account. In all runtimes, the specified account is configured as the treasury account. XCM __delivery__ fees are now being introduced (unless the root origin is sending a message to a system parachain on behalf of the originating chain). # Note for reviewers Most file changes are tests that had to be modified to account for the new fees. Main changes are in: - cumulus/pallets/xcmp-queue/src/lib.rs <- To make it track the delivery fees exponential factor - polkadot/xcm/xcm-builder/src/fee_handling.rs <- Added. Has the FeeManager implementation - All runtime xcm_config files <- To add the FeeManager to the XCM configuration # Important note After this change, instructions that create and send a new XCM (Query*, Report*, ExportMessage, InitiateReserveWithdraw, InitiateTeleport, DepositReserveAsset, TransferReserveAsset, LockAsset and RequestUnlock) will require the corresponding origin account in the origin register to pay for transport delivery fees, and the onward message will fail to be sent if the origin account does not have the required amount. This delivery fee is on top of what we already collect as tx fees in pallet-xcm and XCM BuyExecution fees! re: https://forum.polkadot.network/t/blocknumber-vs-timestamps-should-we-abandon-blocktimes-altogether/4077 This exposes the `LastRelayChainBlockNumber` storage member of `cumulus-pallet-parachain-system` with a getter and alters the behavior of this storage item to only be updated in `on_finalize` to ensure a consistent value throughout `on_initialize` and within transactions. Parachains, especially with features such as asynchronous backing and agile coretime, should not use the parachain block number as a clock. Any feature of Polkadot intended to optimize core utilization and parachain coretime consumption is likely to worsen this clock as it is practically applied. |
