Enable async backing on asset-hub-rococo (#2826)
The goal is to move all system chains on Rococo (+ other testnets?) to use async backing. Use clone instead of fork on pvf (#2477)
@mrcnski Done the change on the prepare worker, once the prepare worker part is good I'll do the same for the execute worker. resolve #2157 - [x] fix broken doc links - [x] fix codec macro typo https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/master/polkadot/node/core/pvf/common/src/error.rs#L81 (see the comment below) - [x] refactor `ValidationError`, `PrepareError` and related error types to use `thiserror` crate ## `codec` issue `codec` macro was mistakenly applied two times to `Kernel` error (so it was encoded with 10 instead of 11 and the same as `JobDied`). subsystem-bench: cache misses profiling (#2893)
## Why we need it To provide another level of understanding to why polkadot's subsystems may perform slower than expected. Cache misses occur when processing large amounts of data, such as during availability recovery. ## Why Cachegrind Cachegrind has many drawbacks: it is slow, it uses its own cache simulation, which is very basic. But unlike `perf`, which is a great tool, Cachegrind can run in a virtual machine. This means we can easily run it in remote installations and even use it in CI/CD to catch possible regressions. Why Cachegrind and not Callgrind, another part of Valgrind? It is simply empirically proven that profiling runs faster with Cachegrind. ## First results First results have been obtained while testing of the approach. Instruction data of the L1 has 0.00% misses of the time. Looking at an output file with `cg_annotate` shows that most of the misses occur during reed-solomon, which is expected. |

Extract warp sync strategy from ChainSync (#2467)
Extract `WarpSync` (and `StateSync` as part of warp sync) from `ChainSync` as independent syncing strategy called by `SyncingEngine`. Introduce `SyncingStrategy` enum as a proxy between `SyncingEngine` and specific syncing strategies. ## Limitations Gap sync is kept in `ChainSync` for now because it shares the same set of peers as block syncing implementation in `ChainSync`. Extraction of a common context responsible for peer management in syncing strategies able to run in parallel is planned for a follow-up PR. ## Further improvements A possibility of conversion of `SyncingStartegy` into a trait should be evaluated. The main stopper for this is that different strategies need to communicate different actions to `SyncingEngine` and respond to different events / provide different APIs (e.g., requesting justifications is only possible via `ChainSync` and not through `WarpSync`; `SendWarpProofRequest` action is only relevant to `WarpSync`, etc.) --------- Co-authored-by: Aaro Altonen <48052676+altonen@users.noreply.github.com> |

add fallback request for req-response protocols (#2771)
Previously, it was only possible to retry the same request on a different protocol name that had the exact same binary payloads. Introduce a way of trying a different request on a different protocol if the first one fails with Unsupported protocol. This helps with adding new req-response versions in polkadot while preserving compatibility with unupgraded nodes. The way req-response protocols were bumped previously was that they were bundled with some other notifications protocol upgrade, like for async backing (but that is more complicated, especially if the feature does not require any changes to a notifications protocol). malus: use spawn_blocking (#2804)
Looks like using `spawn` instead of `spawn_blocking` in malus is leading to a deadlock somehow. I'm not sure why exactly, but switching to `spawn_blocking` fixes https://github.com/paritytech/disabling-e2e-tests/issues/1, at least for `suggest-garbage-candidate` (didn't check other variants). PVF: ensure job processes are cleaned up, add tests (#2643)
Fixes a potential memory leak. `PR_SET_PDEATHSIG` is used to terminate children when the parent dies. Note that this is subject to a race. There seems to be a raceless alternative [here](https://stackoverflow.com/a/42498370/6085242), but the concern is small enough that a bit more complexity doesn't seem worth it. Left a bit more info in the code comment. |

Introduce subsystem benchmarking tool (#2528)
This tool makes it easy to run parachain consensus stress/performance
testing on your development machine or in CI.
## Motivation
The parachain consensus node implementation spans across many modules
which we call subsystems. Each subsystem is responsible for a small part
of logic of the parachain consensus pipeline, but in general the most
load and performance issues are localized in just a few core subsystems
like `availability-recovery`, `approval-voting` or
`dispute-coordinator`. In the absence of such a tool, we would run large
test nets to load/stress test these parts of the system. Setting up and
making sense of the amount of data produced by such a large test is very
expensive, hard to orchestrate and is a huge development time sink.

### Data Availability Read test
An overseer is built with using a real `availability-recovery` susbsytem
instance while dependent subsystems like `av-store`, `network-bridge`
and `runtime-api` are mocked. The network bridge will emulate all the
network peers and their answering to requests.
The test is going to be run for a number of blocks. For each block it
will generate send a “RecoverAvailableData” request for an arbitrary
number of candidates. We wait for the subsystem to respond to all
requests before moving to the next block.
At the same time we collect the usual subsystem metrics and task CPU
metrics and show some nice progress reports while running.

We currently use a bit of a hack in `.cargo/config` to make sure that clippy isn't too annoying by specifying the list of lints. There is now a stable way to define lints for a workspace. The only down side is that every crate seems to have to opt into this so there's a *few* files modified in this PR. Approve multiple candidates with a single signature (#1191)
Initial implementation for the plan discussed here: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/701 Built on top of https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/1178 v0: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot/pull/7554, ## Overall idea When approval-voting checks a candidate and is ready to advertise the approval, defer it in a per-relay chain block until we either have MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT candidates to sign or a candidate has stayed MAX_APPROVALS_COALESCE_TICKS in the queue, in both cases we sign what candidates we have available. This should allow us to reduce the number of approvals messages we have to create/send/verify. The parameters are configurable, so we should find some values that balance: - Security of the network: Delaying broadcasting of an approval shouldn't but the finality at risk and to make sure that never happens we won't delay sending a vote if we are past 2/3 from the no-show time. - Scalability of the network: MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT = 1 & MAX_APPROVALS_COALESCE_TICKS =0, is what we have now and we know from the measurements we did on versi, it bottlenecks approval-distribution/approval-voting when increase significantly the number of validators and parachains - Block storage: In case of disputes we have to import this votes on chain and that increase the necessary storage with MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT * CandidateHash per vote. Given that disputes are not the normal way of the network functioning and we will limit MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT in the single digits numbers, this should be good enough. Changelogs local generation (#1411)
This PR introduces a script and some templates to use the prdoc involved in a release and build: - the changelog - a simple draft of audience documentation Since the prdoc presence was enforced in the middle of the version 1.5.0, not all PRs did come with a `prdoc` file. This PR creates all the missing `prdoc` files with some minimum content allowing to properly generate the changelog. The generated content is **not** suitable for the audience documentation. The audience documentation will be possible with the next version, when all PR come with a proper `prdoc`. ## Assumptions - the prdoc files for release `vX.Y.Z` have been moved under `prdoc/X.Y.Z` - the changelog requires for now for the prdoc files to contain author + topic. sp-core: Rename VrfOutput to VrfPreOutput (#2534)
This will make more sense after https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/2524 since the schnorrkel type for VRF outputs is also renamed in the latest version. Can be reviewed independently though.
