Tsvetomir Dimitrov 59f868d1e9 Deprecate para_id() from CoreState in polkadot primitives (#3979)
With Coretime enabled we can no longer assume there is a static 1:1
mapping between core index and para id. This mapping should be obtained
from the scheduler/claimqueue on block by block basis.

This PR modifies `para_id()` (from `CoreState`) to return the scheduled
`ParaId` for occupied cores and removes its usages in the code.

`Merkelization`, `Merkleization`, is somewhat inconsistent but I left it
as it is.

~~**Note:** In some places the term `Receival` is used to refer to

**Note:** Some usage of British vs American english e.g. `judgement` vs
`judgment`, `initialise` vs `initialize`, `optimise` vs `optimize` etc.
are both present in different places, but I suppose that's
understandable given the number of contributors.

~~**Note:** There is a spelling mistake in `.github/CODEOWNERS` but it
triggers errors in CI when I make changes to it, so I left it as it
is.~~

eskimor b74353d3e9 Fix algorithmic complexity of on-demand scheduler with regards to number of cores. (#3190)
We witnessed really poor performance on Rococo, where we ended up with
50 on-demand cores. This was due to the fact that for each core the full
queue was processed. With this change full queue processing will happen
way less often (most of the time complexity is O(1) or O(log(n))) and if
it happens then only for one core (in expectation).

Also spot price is now updated before each order to ensure economic back
pressure.

TODO:

- [x] Implement
- [x] Basic tests
- [x] Add more tests (see todos)
- [x] Run benchmark to confirm better performance, first results suggest
> 100x faster.
- [x] Write migrations
- [x] Bump scale-info version and remove patch in Cargo.toml
- [x] Write PR docs: on-demand performance improved, more on-demand
cores are now non problematic anymore. If need by also the max queue
size can be increased again. (Maybe not to 10k)

Optional: Performance can be improved even more, if we called
`pop_assignment_for_core()`, before calling `report_processed` (Avoid
needless affinity drops). The effect gets smaller the larger the claim
queue and I would only go for it, if it does not add complexity to the
scheduler.

Tsvetomir Dimitrov e58e854a32 Expose ClaimQueue via a runtime api and use it in collation-generation (#3580)
The PR adds two things:
1. Runtime API exposing the whole claim queue
2. Consumes the API in `collation-generation` to fetch the next
scheduled `ParaEntry` for an occupied core.

Davide Galassi 1e9fd23776 Implement crypto byte array newtypes in term of a shared type (#3684)
Introduces `CryptoBytes` type defined as:

```rust
pub struct CryptoBytes<const N: usize, Tag = ()>(pub [u8; N], PhantomData<fn() -> Tag>);
```

The type implements a bunch of methods and traits which are typically
expected from a byte array newtype
(NOTE: some of the methods and trait implementations IMO are a bit
redundant, but I decided to maintain them all to not change too much
stuff in this PR)

It also introduces two (generic) typical consumers of `CryptoBytes`:
`PublicBytes` and `SignatureBytes`.

```rust
pub struct PublicTag;
pub PublicBytes<const N: usize, CryptoTag> = CryptoBytes<N, (PublicTag, CryptoTag)>;
pub struct SignatureTag;
pub SignatureBytes<const N: usize, CryptoTag> = CryptoBytes<N, (SignatureTag, CryptoTag)>;
```

Both of them use a tag to differentiate the two types at a higher level.
Downstream specializations will further specialize using a dedicated
crypto tag. For example in ECDSA:

```rust
pub struct EcdsaTag;
pub type Public = PublicBytes<PUBLIC_KEY_SERIALIZED_SIZE, EcdsaTag>;
pub type Signature = PublicBytes<PUBLIC_KEY_SERIALIZED_SIZE, EcdsaTag>;
```

Overall we have a cleaner and most importantly **consistent** code for
all the types involved

All these details are opaque to the end user which can use `Public` and
`Signature` for the cryptos as before

This PR removes `AssignmentProviderConfig` and uses the corresponding

`scheduling_lookahead` and all coretime/ondemand related parameters are
extracted in a separate struct - `SchedulerParams`.

Andrei Sandu 2431001ec0 Runtime: allow backing multiple candidates of same parachain on different cores (#3231)
Fixes https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/3144

Builds on top of https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/3229

### Summary
Some preparations for Runtime to support elastic scaling, guarded by
config node features bit `FeatureIndex::ElasticScalingMVP`. This PR
introduces a per-candidate `CoreIndex` but does it in a hacky way to
avoid changing `CandidateCommitments`, `CandidateReceipts` primitives
and networking protocols.

#### Including `CoreIndex` in `BackedCandidate`
If the `ElasticScalingMVP` feature bit is enabled then
`BackedCandidate::validator_indices` is extended by 8 bits.
The value stored in these bits represents the assumed core index for the
candidate.

It is temporary solution which works by creating a mapping from
`BackedCandidate` to `CoreIndex` by assuming the `CoreIndex` can be
discovered by checking in which validator group the validator that
signed the statement is.

TODO:
- [x] fix tests
- [x] add new tests
- [x] Bump runtime API for Kusama, so we have that node features thing!

Andrei Sandu 60e537b95f Elastic scaling: use an assumed CoreIndex in candidate-backing (#3229)
First step in implementing
https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/3144

### Summary of changes
- switch statement `Table` candidate mapping from `ParaId` to
`CoreIndex`
- introduce experimental `InjectCoreIndex` node feature.
- determine and assume a `CoreIndex` for a candidate based on statement
validator index. If the signature is valid it means validator controls
the validator that index and we can easily map it to a validator
group/core.
- introduce a temporary provisioner fix until we fully enable elastic
scaling in the subystem. The fix ensures we don't fetch the same
backable candidate when calling `get_backable_candidate` for each core.

TODO:
- [x] fix backing tests
- [x] fix statement table tests
- [x] add new test

It can be reproduced locally.

```sh
# First you can check if there would be semver incompatible bumps (looks good in this case):
$ zepter transpose dependency lift-to-workspace --ignore-errors syn quote thiserror "regex:^serde.*"
# Then apply the changes:
$ zepter transpose dependency lift-to-workspace --version-resolver=highest syn quote thiserror "regex:^serde.*" --fix
# And format the changes:
$ taplo format --config .config/taplo.toml
Squirrel be8e626806 Set clippy lints in workspace (requires rust 1.74) (#2390)
We currently use a bit of a hack in `.cargo/config` to make sure that
clippy isn't too annoying by specifying the list of lints.
There is now a stable way to define lints for a workspace. The only down
side is that every crate seems to have to opt into this so there's a
*few* files modified in this PR.
Dependencies:
- [x] PR that upgrades CI to use rust 1.74 is merged.
Alexandru Gheorghe a84dd0dba5 Approve multiple candidates with a single signature (#1191)
Initial implementation for the plan discussed here: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/701
Built on top of https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/1178
v0: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot/pull/7554,
## Overall idea
When approval-voting checks a candidate and is ready to advertise the
approval, defer it in a per-relay chain block until we either have
MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT candidates to sign or a candidate has stayed
MAX_APPROVALS_COALESCE_TICKS in the queue, in both cases we sign what
candidates we have available.
This should allow us to reduce the number of approvals messages we have
to create/send/verify. The parameters are configurable, so we should
find some values that balance:
- Security of the network: Delaying broadcasting of an approval
shouldn't but the finality at risk and to make sure that never happens
we won't delay sending a vote if we are past 2/3 from the no-show time.
- Scalability of the network: MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT = 1 &
MAX_APPROVALS_COALESCE_TICKS =0, is what we have now and we know from
the measurements we did on versi, it bottlenecks
approval-distribution/approval-voting when increase significantly the
number of validators and parachains
- Block storage: In case of disputes we have to import this votes on
chain and that increase the necessary storage with
MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT * CandidateHash per vote. Given that
disputes are not the normal way of the network functioning and we will
limit MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT in the single digits numbers, this
should be good enough. Alternatively, we could try to create a better
way to store this on-chain through indirection, if that's needed.
## Other fixes:
- Fixed the fact that we were sending random assignments to
non-validators, that was wrong because those won't do anything with it
and they won't gossip it either because they do not have a grid topology
set, so we would waste the random assignments.
- Added metrics to be able to debug potential no-shows and
mis-processing of approvals/assignments.
## TODO:
- [x] Get feedback, that this is moving in the right direction. @ordian
@sandreim @eskimor @burdges, let me know what you think.
- [x] More and more testing.
- [x]  Test in versi.
- [x] Make MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT &
MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_WAIT_MILLIS a parachain host configuration.
- [x] Make sure the backwards compatibility works correctly
- [x] Make sure this direction is compatible with other streams of work:
https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/635 &
https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/742
If people want we can customise the format rules as described here
@ggwpez, I suggest zepter is used only for checking features are
Alin Dima fc12f435e3 add NodeFeatures field to HostConfiguration and runtime API (#2177)
Adds a `NodeFeatures` bitfield value to the runtime `HostConfiguration`,
with the purpose of coordinating the enabling of node-side features,
such as: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/628 and
https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/598.
These are features that require all validators enable them at the same
time, assuming all/most nodes have upgraded their node versions.
This PR doesn't add any feature yet. These are coming in future PRs.
Also adds a runtime API for querying the state of the client features
and an extrinsic for setting/unsetting a feature by its index in the bitfield.
Note: originally part of:
https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/1644, but posted as
standalone to be reused by other PRs until the initial PR is merged
Bastian Köcher f3bf5c1acd xcm: Change TypeInfo::path to not include staging (#1948)
The `xcm` crate was renamed to `staging-xcm` to be able to publish it to
crates.io as someone as squatted `xcm`. The problem with this rename is
that the `TypeInfo` includes the crate name which ultimately lands in
the metadata. The metadata is consumed by downstream users like
`polkadot-js` or people building on top of `polkadot-js`. These people
are using the entire `path` to find the type in the type registry. Thus,
their code would break as the type path would now be [`staging_xcm`,
`VersionedXcm`] instead of [`xcm`, `VersionedXcm`]. This pull request
fixes this by renaming the path segment `staging_xcm` to `xcm`.
This requires: https://github.com/paritytech/scale-info/pull/197
Branislav Kontur d569e728ca "Common good" vs "System" parachain clean up (#1406)
## Summary
The term "common good parachain" has been abandoned in favor of "system
parachain" - e.g. [Joe's speech at
Decoded2023](https://youtu.be/CSO-ERHK2gY?t=456). This pull request
tries to fix and align code with this vision.
## Impact
The important change is implementation of `trait IsSystem` for `Id`
[here](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/1406/files#diff-0b7b4f5b962a18ce980354592b55ab2a27b5a2e9f6f8089ec803ca73853e8583R225-R229)
where we changed condition from `< 1000` to `<= 1999`, which means that
all parachain IDs bellow 1999 (included) are considered as "system
parachain" IDs. This change has a direct impact on the following
components:
####
[ChildSystemParachainAsSuperuser](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/master/polkadot/xcm/xcm-builder/src/origin_conversion.rs#L72-L88)
This origin converter is used for allowing to process XCM `Transact`
from "system parachain" on the relay chain - e.g. see [configuration for
Kusama](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/master/polkadot/runtime/kusama/src/xcm_config.rs#L92-L101).
Only configured for Kusama, Westend, Rococo runtimes.
**No need for this feature anymore.** See
[comment](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/1406#issuecomment-1708218715).
####
[IsChildSystemParachain](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/master/polkadot/xcm/xcm-builder/src/barriers.rs#L310-L317)
`IsChildSystemParachain` is used with `AllowExplicitUnpaidExecutionFrom`
barrier for checking XCM programs (they have to start with
`UnpaidExecution` instruction).
Only configured for Kusama, Westend, Rococo runtimes.
**Overall the impact is low or mostly ok because it only allows unpaid
execution for "system parachains" (e.g. AssetHub, BridgeHub...) on the
relay chain.**
####
[SiblingSystemParachainAsSuperuser](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/master/polkadot/xcm/xcm-builder/src/origin_conversion.rs#L94-L114)
Not used anywhere in `polkadot-sdk` repo.
## Unresolved Questions
- [ ] constants `LOWEST_USER_ID` and `LOWEST_PUBLIC_ID` seem to express
the same thing now, do we want to keep them both or deprecated one of
them? If so, which one?
- [x] determine impact for `ChildSystemParachainAsSuperuser`
## TODO
- [ ] when merged here, open PR to the `polkadot-fellows`
Alin Dima d6af073aa5 backing: move the min votes threshold to the runtime (#1200)
* move min backing votes const to runtime
also cache it per-session in the backing subsystem
Signed-off-by: alindima <alin@parity.io>
* add runtime migration
* introduce api versioning for min_backing votes
also enable it for rococo/versi for testing
* also add min_backing_votes runtime calls to statement-distribution
this dependency has been recently introduced by async backing
* remove explicit version runtime API call
this is not needed, as the RuntimeAPISubsystem already takes care
of versioning and will return NotSupported if the version is not
right.
* address review comments
- parametrise backing votes runtime API with session index
- remove RuntimeInfo usage in backing subsystem, as runtime API
caches the min backing votes by session index anyway.
- move the logic for adjusting the configured needed backing votes with the size of the backing group
to a primitives helper.
- move the legacy min backing votes value to a primitives helper.
- mark JoinMultiple error as fatal, since the Canceled (non-multiple) counterpart is also fatal.
- make backing subsystem handle fatal errors for new leaves update.
- add HostConfiguration consistency check for zeroed backing votes threshold
- add cumulus accompanying change
* fix cumulus test compilation
* fix tests
* more small fixes
* fix merge
* bump runtime api version for westend and rollback version for rococo
We consider BEEFY mature enough to run by default on all nodes
for test networks (Rococo/Wococo/Versi).
Right now, most nodes are not running it since it's opt-in using
--beefy flag. Switch to an opt-out model for test networks.
Replace --beefy flag from CLI with --no-beefy and have BEEFY
client start by default on test networks.
* Add benchmarking to on demand pallet
* Make place_order test check for success
* Add on demand benchmarks
* Add local test weights to rococo runtime
* Modify TTL drop behaviour to not skip claims
Previous behaviour would jump a new claim from the assignment provider
ahead in the claimqueue, assuming lookahead is larger than 1.
* Use default genesis config for benchmark tests
* Refactor config builder param
* Move lifecycle test from scheduler to on demand
* Remove unneeded lifecycle test
Paras module via the parachain assignment provider doesn't provide
new assignments if a parachain loses it's lease. The on demand
assignment provider doesn't provide an assignment that is not a
parathread.
* Re enable validator shuffle test
* More realistic weights for place_order
* Remove redundant import
* Fix backwards compatibility (hopefully)
* ".git/.scripts/commands/bench/bench.sh" --subcommand=runtime --runtime=rococo --target_dir=polkadot --pallet=runtime_parachains::assigner_on_demand
parachain encompasses both on demand and slot auction / bulk.
* Restore availability_timeout_predicate function
* Clean up leftover comments
* Update runtime/parachains/src/scheduler/tests.rs
