Bastian Köcher 5a347adad2 Fix state_subscribeRuntimeVersion for parachains (#9617)
The old implementation was listening for storage changes and every time
a block changed the `CODE` storage field, it checked if the runtime
version changed. It used the best block to compare against the latest
known runtime version. It could happen that you processed the storage
notification of block Y and checked the runtime version of block X (the
current best block). This is also what happened on parachains.
Parachains import blocks and set the new best block in a later step.
This means we imported the block that changed the code, got notified and
checked the runtime version of the current best block (which would still
be the parent of the block that changed the runtime). As the parent did
not changed the runtime, the runtime version also did not changed and we
never notified the subscribers.

The new implementation now switches to listen for best imported blocks.
Every time we import a new best block, we check its runtime version
against the latest known runtime version. As we also send a notification
when the parachains sets a block as new best block, we will trigger this
code path correctly. It moves some computation from checking if the key
was modified to getting the runtime version. As fetching the runtime
version is a rather common pattern, it should not make any big
difference performancewise.

Bastian Köcher d489bd70b5 Do not call initialize_block before any runtime api (#8953)
* Do not call `initialize_block` before any runtime api

Before this change we always called `initialize_block` before calling
into the runtime. There was already support with `skip_initialize` to skip
the initialization. Almost no runtime_api requires that
`initialize_block` is called before. Actually this only leads to higher
execution times most of the time, because all runtime modules are
initialized and this is especially expensive when the block contained a
runtime upgrade.

TLDR: Do not call `initialize_block` before calling a runtime api.

Hernando Castano 9bd23e7f01 Use Subscription Manager from jsonrpc-pubsub: The Sequel (#6254)
* Bump jsonrpc pubsub, core, http, and ws

Right now these are the packages which _need_ to be updated
so I can just the latest `jsonrpc-pubsub` code. Once a release
it cut upstream the rest of the dependencies should be updated
as well.

* Use jsonrpc-pubsub's SubscriptionManager

This places sc-rpc-api::Subscriptions

* Bump jsonrpc-core outside of sc-rpc-*

* Update client/rpc tests

Right now one of the `author` tests is failing, I
need to think a bit about how best to fix it.

* Remove Subscriptions manager

There's no need for this implementation since we're
using the one from `jsonrpc-pubsub` now

* Fix author RPC test

This test used to check for a numerial subscription ID,
whereas now it uses a string based ID which is the default
provided by `jsonrpc-pubsub`'s subscription manager.

* Remove unused NumericIdProvider

* Add missing bracket

Removed one too many with that last one, lol

* Bump `jsonrpc` to v14.2

There's an exception though. `jsonrpc-derive` cannot be bumped
past v14.0.5 just yet since it has a dependency on `quote` pinned
to v1.0.1. This means that at the moment it won't build on Substrate
since it's using v1.0.3.

* Track `jsonrpc-derive` master branch

* Bump `quote` version to v1.0.6

* Bump `jsonrpc-derive` to v14.2.1

This includes support for `quote` v1.0.6

* Use exact version for jsonrpc crates

Doing this to make sure any updates in jsonrpc don't
accidently trickle down to Polkadot.

Bastian Köcher 26fa6e3c76 Move runtime upgrade to frame-executive (#5197)
* Move runtime upgrade to `frame-executive`

Instead of storing the runtime upgraded in the space of `frame-system`,
this moves it to `frame-executive`. We also start storing the
`spec_version` and `impl_version` the last runtime upgrade was applied.

This scheme has multiple advantages:
- We don't need to make sure that runtime upgrade was set.
- This will work in the future when we want to test a runtime upgrade,
because the `on_runtime_upgrade` will be executed automatically when the
runtime changes.

* Move `LAST_RUNTIME_UPGRADE` key to `frame-executive`

* Add some more documentation

* Make sure `spec_version` always increases between runtime upgrades

* Fix test

* Upgrade `parity-multiaddr` to fix compilation

* Also check if the `spec_name` changed

* Remove `RuntimeUpgraded` storage entry

* Don't run on genesis

Benjamin Kampmann 5a33228ea9 Reduce usage of Blake2Hasher (#5132)
This reduces the usage of `Blake2Hasher` in the code base and replaces
it with `BlakeTwo256`. The most important change is the removal of the
custom extern function for `Blake2Hasher`. The runtime `Hash` trait is
now also simplified and directly requires that the implementing type
implements `Hashable`.
