Bastian Köcher	aa68ea58f3	Parachains-Aura: Only produce once per slot (#3308 ) Given how the block production is driven for Parachains right now, with the enabling of async backing we would produce two blocks per slot. Until we have a proper collator implementation, the "hack" is to prevent the production of multiple blocks per slot. s0me0ne-unkn0wn	ec6bf5d0a5	Use dynamic aura slot duration in lookahead collator (#3211 ) It's a follow-up of #2949. It enables the lookahead collator to dynamically adjust the aura slot size, which may change during the runtime upgrade. It also addressed a couple of issues with time constants I missed in the original PR. Good news: it works. The parachain successfully switches from sync backing with 12s slots to async backing with 6s slots. Bad news: during the transitional period of a single block in which the actual runtime upgrade is performed, it still gets the old slot duration of 12s (as it gets it from the best block), resulting in a runtime panic (logs follow). That doesn't affect the following block production of the parachain. Oliver Tale-Yazdi	e80c24733f	Lift dependencies to the workspace (Part 1) (#2070 ) Changes (partial https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/994): - Set log to `0.4.20` everywhere - Lift `log` to the workspace Starting with a simpler one after seeing https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/2065 from @jsdw. This sets the `default-features` to `false` in the root and then overwrites that in each create to its original value. This is necessary since otherwise the `default` features are additive and its impossible to disable them in the crate again once they are enabled in the workspace. s0me0ne-unkn0wn	3e8139e7de	Do not run unneeded subsystems on collator and its alongside node (#3061 ) Currently, collators and their alongside nodes spin up a full-scale overseer running a bunch of subsystems that are not needed if the node is not a validator. That was considered to be harmless; however, we've got problems with unused subsystems getting stalled for a reason not currently known, resulting in the overseer exiting and bringing down the whole node. This PR aims to only run needed subsystems on such nodes, replacing the rest with `DummySubsystem`. It also enables collator-optimized availability recovery subsystem implementation. Niklas Adolfsson	e16ef0861f	rpc: backpressured RPC server (bump jsonrpsee 0.20) (#1313 ) This is a rather big change in jsonrpsee, the major things in this bump are: - Server backpressure (the subscription impls are modified to deal with that) - Allow custom error types / return types (remove jsonrpsee::core::Error and jsonrpee::core::CallError) - Bug fixes (graceful shutdown in particular not used by substrate anyway) - Less dependencies for the clients in particular - Return type requires Clone in method call responses - Moved to tokio channels - Async subscription API (not used in this PR) Major changes in this PR: - The subscriptions are now bounded and if subscription can't keep up with the server it is dropped - CLI: add parameter to configure the jsonrpc server bounded message buffer (default is 64) - Add our own subscription helper to deal with the unbounded streams in substrate The most important things in this PR to review is the added helpers functions in `substrate/client/rpc/src/utils.rs` and the rest is pretty much chore. Regarding the "bounded buffer limit" it may cause the server to handle the JSON-RPC calls slower than before. The message size limit is bounded by "--rpc-response-size" thus "by default 10MB * 64 = 640MB" but the subscription message size is not covered by this limit and could be capped as well. (#2306 ) Step towards https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/1975 As reported https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/1975#issuecomment-1774534225 I'd like to encapsulate crypto related stuff in a dedicated folder. Currently all cryptographic primitive wrappers are all sparsed in `substrate/core` which contains "misc core" stuff. To simplify the process, as the first step with this PR I propose to move the cryptographic hashing there. The `substrate/crypto` folder was already created to contains `ec-utils` crate. Bastian Köcher	930c151928	`cumulus-primitives-parachain-inherent`: Split into two crates (#2803 ) This splits `cumulus-primitives-parachain-inherent` into two crates, the previous `cumulus-primitives-parachain-inherent` and a new `cumulus-client-parachain-inherent`. The idea behind this is to move the `create_at` logic into the client crate. This removes quite a lot of unrelated dependencies from the runtime std build and thus, makes the compilation faster. On my Laptop the compilation is goes down by one minute for `asset-hub-rococo-runtime`. Squirrel	be8e626806	Set clippy lints in workspace (requires rust 1.74) (#2390 ) We currently use a bit of a hack in `.cargo/config` to make sure that clippy isn't too annoying by specifying the list of lints. There is now a stable way to define lints for a workspace. The only down side is that every crate seems to have to opt into this so there's a few files modified in this PR. Joshy Orndorff	8683bbeefb	Rename `ExportGenesisStateCommand` to `ExportGenesisHeadCommand` and make it respect custom genesis block builders (#2331 ) Closes #2326. This PR both fixes a logic bug and replaces an incorrect name. ## Bug Fix: Respecting custom genesis builder Prior to this PR the standard logic for creating a genesis block was repeated inside of cumulus. This PR removes that duplicated logic, and calls into the proper `BuildGenesisBlock` implementation. One consequence is that if the genesis block has already been initialized, it will not be re-created, but rather read from the database like it is for other node invocations. So you need to watch out for old unpurged data during the development process. Offchain tools may need to be updated accordingly. I've already filed https://github.com/paritytech/zombienet/issues/1519 ## Rename: It doesn't export state. It exports head data. The name export-genesis-state was always wrong, nad it's never too late to right a wrong. I've changed the name of the struct to `ExportGenesisHeadCommand`. There is still the question of what to do with individual nodes' public CLIs. I have updated the parachain template to a reasonable default that preserves compatibility with tools that will expect `export-genesis-state` to still work. And I've chosen not to modify the public CLIs of any other nodes in the repo. Alexandru Gheorghe	a84dd0dba5	Approve multiple candidates with a single signature (#1191 ) Initial implementation for the plan discussed here: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/701 Built on top of https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/1178 v0: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot/pull/7554, ## Overall idea When approval-voting checks a candidate and is ready to advertise the approval, defer it in a per-relay chain block until we either have MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT candidates to sign or a candidate has stayed MAX_APPROVALS_COALESCE_TICKS in the queue, in both cases we sign what candidates we have available. This should allow us to reduce the number of approvals messages we have to create/send/verify. The parameters are configurable, so we should find some values that balance: - Security of the network: Delaying broadcasting of an approval shouldn't but the finality at risk and to make sure that never happens we won't delay sending a vote if we are past 2/3 from the no-show time. - Scalability of the network: MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT = 1 & MAX_APPROVALS_COALESCE_TICKS =0, is what we have now and we know from the measurements we did on versi, it bottlenecks approval-distribution/approval-voting when increase significantly the number of validators and parachains - Block storage: In case of disputes we have to import this votes on chain and that increase the necessary storage with MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT * CandidateHash per vote. Given that disputes are not the normal way of the network functioning and we will limit MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT in the single digits numbers, this should be good enough. Sebastian Kunert	9a650c46fd	PoV Reclaim (Clawback) Node Side (#1462 ) This PR provides the infrastructure for the pov-reclaim mechanism discussed in #209. The goal is to provide the current proof size to the runtime so it can be used to reclaim storage weight. ## New Host Function - A new host function is provided [here](https://github.com/skunert/polkadot-sdk/blob/5b317fda3be205f4136f10d4490387ccd4f9765d/cumulus/primitives/pov-reclaim/src/lib.rs#L23). It returns the size of the current proof size to the runtime. If recording is not enabled, it returns 0. ## Implementation Overview - Implement option to enable proof recording during import in the client. This is currently enabled for `polkadot-parachain`, `parachain-template` and the cumulus test node. - Make the proof recorder ready for no-std. It was previously only enabled for std environments, but we need to record the proof size in `validate_block` too. - Provide a recorder implementation that only the records the size of incoming nodes and does not store the nodes itself. - Fix benchmarks that were broken by async backing changes - Provide new externalities extension that is registered by default if proof recording is enabled. - I think we should discuss the naming, pov-reclaim was more intuitive to me, but we could also go with clawback like in the issue. ## Impact of proof recording during import With proof recording: 6.3058 Kelem/s Without proof recording: 6.3427 Kelem/s The measured impact on the importing performance is quite low on my machine using the block import benchmark. Aaro Altonen	e71c484d5b	Rework the event system of `sc-network` (#1370 ) This commit introduces a new concept called `NotificationService` which allows Polkadot protocols to communicate with the underlying notification protocol implementation directly, without routing events through `NetworkWorker`. This implies that each protocol has its own service which it uses to communicate with remote peers and that each `NotificationService` is unique with respect to the underlying notification protocol, meaning `NotificationService` for the transaction protocol can only be used to send and receive transaction-related notifications. The `NotificationService` concept introduces two additional benefits: * allow protocols to start using custom handshakes * allow protocols to accept/reject inbound peers Previously the validation of inbound connections was solely the responsibility of `ProtocolController`. This caused issues with light peers and `SyncingEngine` as `ProtocolController` would accept more peers than `SyncingEngine` could accept which caused peers to have differing views of their own states. `SyncingEngine` would reject excess peers but these rejections were not properly communicated to those peers causing them to assume that they were accepted. With `NotificationService`, the local handshake is not sent to remote peer if peer is rejected which allows it to detect that it was rejected. This commit also deprecates the use of `NetworkEventStream` for all notification-related events and going forward only DHT events are provided through `NetworkEventStream`. If protocols wish to follow each other's events, they must introduce additional abtractions, as is done for GRANDPA and transactions protocols by following the syncing protocol through `SyncEventStream`. Sebastian Kunert	ec3a61ed86	Remove pov-recovery race condition/Improve zombienet test (#2526 ) The test was a bit flaky on CI. There was a race condition in the pov-recovery system. If the timing is bad, it can happen that a block waits for a parent that is already queued for import. The check if a block has children waiting happens when we insert into the import queue. So we need to do an additional check once we receive the import notification for the parent block. Second issue is that `alice` was missing `--in-peers 0` and `--out-peers 0`, so alice was sometimes still fetching block via sync and the assertion on the logs in zombienet would fail. There is another potential issue that I saw once locally. We have a failing pov-recovery queue that fails from time to time to check that the retry mechanism does what it should. We now make sure that the same candidate is never failed twice, so the tests become more predictable.	2023-11-28 16:59:06 +01:00

Michal Kucharczyk	b25d29a502	cumulus-consensus-common: block import: `delayed_best_block` flag added (#2001 ) This PR adds the `delayed_best_block` flag to `ParachainBlockImport`. If not set, the `params.fork_choice` is not updated (to `ForkChoiceStrategy::Custom`) during the block import. When `delayed_best_block` is set to `false` all parachain blocks on the [longest fork](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/552be4800d9e4b480f79a300fc531783e04be099/substrate/client/service/src/client/client.rs#L708-L709) will be notified as the best block, allowing transaction pool to be updated with every imported block. Otherwise imported blocks will not be notified as best blocks (`fork_choice=ForkChoiceStrategy::Custom(false)`), and transaction pool would be updated only with best block received from relay-chain. Alin Dima	fc12f435e3	add NodeFeatures field to HostConfiguration and runtime API (#2177 ) Adds a `NodeFeatures` bitfield value to the runtime `HostConfiguration`, with the purpose of coordinating the enabling of node-side features, such as: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/628 and https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/598. These are features that require all validators enable them at the same time, assuming all/most nodes have upgraded their node versions. This PR doesn't add any feature yet. These are coming in future PRs. Also adds a runtime API for querying the state of the client features and an extrinsic for setting/unsetting a feature by its index in the bitfield. Replace that with just checking the PoV hash, which consumes much less CPU and takes less time. We also don't need to check the `PersistedValidationData` hash, as collators don't use it. Reason: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/575#issuecomment-1806572230 After systematic chunks recovery is merged, collators will no longer do any reed-solomon encoding/decoding, which has proven to be a great CPU consumer. Sebastian Kunert	8ebb5c3319	Disable incoming light-client connections for minimal relay node (#2202 ) When running with `--relay-chain-rpc-url` we received multiple reports of high traffic that disappears when `--in-peers-light 0` is set. Indeed it does not make much sense for light clients to connect to the minimal node since it is not running the block announce protocol and the request/response protocol for light clients. Bastian Köcher	bea8baed69	level-monitor: Fix issue with warp syncing (#2053 ) When warp syncing a node we import a header of the parachain around the tip of the chain. This header is currently not imported as finalized block (should be fixed at some point as well), the parent headers are not yet present (still being synced) and thus, we run into a panic. Sebastian Kunert	21b32849db	Cumulus: Allow aura to use initialized collation request receiver (#1911 ) When launching our [small network](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/master/cumulus/zombienet/examples/small_network.toml) for testing the node was crashing here shortly after launch: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/5cdd819ed295645958afd9d937d989978fd0c84e/polkadot/node/collation-generation/src/lib.rs#L140 After changes in #1788 for the asset hub collator we are waiting for blocks of the shell runtime to pass before we initialize aura. However, this means that we attempted to initialize the collation related relay chain subsystems twice, leading to the error.
