Fix spelling mistakes across the whole repository (#3808)
**Update:** Pushed additional changes based on the review comments. **This pull request fixes various spelling mistakes in this repository.** Most of the changes are contained in the first **3** commits: - `Fix spelling mistakes in comments and docs` - `Fix spelling mistakes in test names` - `Fix spelling mistakes in error messages, panic messages, logs and tracing` Other source code spelling mistakes are separated into individual commits for easier reviewing: - `Fix the spelling of 'authority'` - `Fix the spelling of 'REASONABLE_HEADERS_IN_JUSTIFICATION_ANCESTRY'` - `Fix the spelling of 'prev_enqueud_messages'` - `Fix the spelling of 'endpoint'` - `Fix the spelling of 'children'` - `Fix the spelling of 'PenpalSiblingSovereignAccount'` - `Fix the spelling of 'PenpalSudoAccount'` - `Fix the spelling of 'insufficient'` - `Fix the spelling of 'PalletXcmExtrinsicsBenchmark'` - `Fix the spelling of 'subtracted'` - `Fix the spelling of 'CandidatePendingAvailability'` - `Fix the spelling of 'exclusive'` - `Fix the spelling of 'until'` - `Fix the spelling of 'discriminator'` - `Fix the spelling of 'nonexistent'` - `Fix the spelling of 'subsystem'` - `Fix the spelling of 'indices'` - `Fix the spelling of 'committed'` - `Fix the spelling of 'topology'` - `Fix the spelling of 'response'` - `Fix the spelling of 'beneficiary'` - `Fix the spelling of 'formatted'` - `Fix the spelling of 'UNKNOWN_PROOF_REQUEST'` - `Fix the spelling of 'succeeded'` - `Fix the spelling of 'reopened'` - `Fix the spelling of 'proposer'` - `Fix the spelling of 'InstantiationNonce'` - `Fix the spelling of 'depositor'` - `Fix the spelling of 'expiration'` - `Fix the spelling of 'phantom'` - `Fix the spelling of 'AggregatedKeyValue'` - `Fix the spelling of 'randomness'` - `Fix the spelling of 'defendant'` - `Fix the spelling of 'AquaticMammal'` - `Fix the spelling of 'transactions'` - `Fix the spelling of 'PassingTracingSubscriber'` - `Fix the spelling of 'TxSignaturePayload'` - `Fix the spelling of 'versioning'` - `Fix the spelling of 'descendant'` - `Fix the spelling of 'overridden'` - `Fix the spelling of 'network'` Let me know if this structure is adequate. **Note:** The usage of the words `Merkle`, `Merkelize`, `Merklization`, `Merkelization`, `Merkleization`, is somewhat inconsistent but I left it as it is. ~~**Note:** In some places the term `Receival` is used to refer to message reception, IMO `Reception` is the correct word here, but I left it as it is.~~ ~~**Note:** In some places the term `Overlayed` is used instead of the more acceptable version `Overlaid` but I also left it as it is.~~ ~~**Note:** In some places the term `Applyable` is used instead of the correct version `Applicable` but I also left it as it is.~~ **Note:** Some usage of British vs American english e.g. `judgement` vs `judgment`, `initialise` vs `initialize`, `optimise` vs `optimize` etc. are both present in different places, but I suppose that's understandable given the number of contributors. ~~**Note:** There is a spelling mistake in `.github/CODEOWNERS` but it triggers errors in CI when I make changes to it, so I left it as it is.~~ |

Lift dependencies to the workspace (Part 1) (#2070)
Changes (partial https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/994): - Set log to `0.4.20` everywhere - Lift `log` to the workspace Starting with a simpler one after seeing https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/2065 from @jsdw. This sets the `default-features` to `false` in the root and then overwrites that in each create to its original value. This is necessary since otherwise the `default` features are additive and its impossible to disable them in the crate again once they are enabled in the workspace. I am using a tool to do this, so its mostly a test to see that it works as expected. --------- Signed-off-by: Oliver Tale-Yazdi <oliver.tale-yazdi@parity.io> |

approval-distribution: Update topology if authorities are discovered later (#2981)
Fixes: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/2138. Especially on restart AuthorithyDiscovery cache is not populated so we create an invalid topology and messages won't be routed correctly for the entire session. This PR proposes to try to fix this by updating the topology as soon as we now the Authority/PeerId mapping, that should impact the situation dramatically. approval-distribution: aggresion must target unfinalized chain rather than unapproved chain (#2988)
Found the issue while investigating the recent finality stall on Westend after upgrading to 1.6.0. Approval distribution aggression is supposed to trade off bandwidth and re-send assignemnts/approvals until enough approvals are be received by at least 2/3 validators. This is supposed to be a catch all mechanism when network connectivity goes south or many validators reboot at the same time. This fix ensures that we always resend approvals starting with the first unfinalized block even in the case when it appears approved from the node's perspective. Set clippy lints in workspace (requires rust 1.74) (#2390)
We currently use a bit of a hack in `.cargo/config` to make sure that clippy isn't too annoying by specifying the list of lints. There is now a stable way to define lints for a workspace. The only down side is that every crate seems to have to opt into this so there's a *few* files modified in this PR. Dependencies: - [x] PR that upgrades CI to use rust 1.74 is merged. --------- Co-authored-by: joe petrowski <25483142+joepetrowski@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: Branislav Kontur <bkontur@gmail.com> Co-authored-by: Liam Aharon <liam.aharon@hotmail.com> |

Approve multiple candidates with a single signature (#1191)
Initial implementation for the plan discussed here: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/701 Built on top of https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/1178 v0: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot/pull/7554, ## Overall idea When approval-voting checks a candidate and is ready to advertise the approval, defer it in a per-relay chain block until we either have MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT candidates to sign or a candidate has stayed MAX_APPROVALS_COALESCE_TICKS in the queue, in both cases we sign what candidates we have available. This should allow us to reduce the number of approvals messages we have to create/send/verify. The parameters are configurable, so we should find some values that balance: - Security of the network: Delaying broadcasting of an approval shouldn't but the finality at risk and to make sure that never happens we won't delay sending a vote if we are past 2/3 from the no-show time. - Scalability of the network: MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT = 1 & MAX_APPROVALS_COALESCE_TICKS =0, is what we have now and we know from the measurements we did on versi, it bottlenecks approval-distribution/approval-voting when increase significantly the number of validators and parachains - Block storage: In case of disputes we have to import this votes on chain and that increase the necessary storage with MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT * CandidateHash per vote. Given that disputes are not the normal way of the network functioning and we will limit MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT in the single digits numbers, this should be good enough. Alternatively, we could try to create a better way to store this on-chain through indirection, if that's needed. ## Other fixes: - Fixed the fact that we were sending random assignments to non-validators, that was wrong because those won't do anything with it and they won't gossip it either because they do not have a grid topology set, so we would waste the random assignments. - Added metrics to be able to debug potential no-shows and mis-processing of approvals/assignments. ## TODO: - [x] Get feedback, that this is moving in the right direction. @ordian @sandreim @eskimor @burdges, let me know what you think. - [x] More and more testing. - [x] Test in versi. - [x] Make MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_COUNT & MAX_APPROVAL_COALESCE_WAIT_MILLIS a parachain host configuration. - [x] Make sure the backwards compatibility works correctly - [x] Make sure this direction is compatible with other streams of work: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/635 & https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/742 - [x] Final versi burn-in before merging --------- Signed-off-by: Alexandru Gheorghe <alexandru.gheorghe@parity.io> |

approval-voting improvement: include all tranche0 assignments in one certificate (#1178)
**_PR migrated from https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot/pull/6782_** This PR will upgrade the network protocol to version 3 -> VStaging which will later be renamed to V3. This version introduces a new kind of assignment certificate that will be used for tranche0 assignments. Instead of issuing/importing one tranche0 assignment per candidate, there will be just one certificate per relay chain block per validator. However, we will not be sending out the new assignment certificates, yet. So everything should work exactly as before. Once the majority of the validators have been upgraded to the new protocol version we will enable the new certificates (starting at a specific relay chain block) with a new client update. There are still a few things that need to be done: - [x] Use bitfield instead of Vec<CandidateIndex>: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot/pull/6802 - [x] Fix existing approval-distribution and approval-voting tests - [x] Fix bitfield-distribution and statement-distribution tests - [x] Fix network bridge tests - [x] Implement todos in the code - [x] Add tests to cover new code - [x] Update metrics - [x] Remove the approval distribution aggression levels: TBD PR - [x] Parachains DB migration - [x] Test network protocol upgrade on Versi - [x] Versi Load test - [x] Add Zombienet test - [x] Documentation updates - [x] Fix for sending DistributeAssignment for each candidate claimed by a v2 assignment (warning: Importing locally an already known assignment) - [x] Fix AcceptedDuplicate - [x] Fix DB migration so that we can still keep old data. - [x] Final Versi burn in --------- Signed-off-by: Andrei Sandu <andrei-mihail@parity.io> Signed-off-by: Alexandru Gheorghe <alexandru.gheorghe@parity.io> Co-authored-by: Alexandru Gheorghe <alexandru.gheorghe@parity.io> |

Fix links to implementers' guide (#1865)
# Description In a couple of cases, there were links pointing to the w3f github pages domain. In other instances, there were links pointing to the old polkadot repo's github pages. Both of these are now pointing to the relevant links in https://paritytech.github.io/polkadot-sdk/book/index.html. These changes were made specifically because the w3f github pages returns a 404, and while fixing the links, the old polkadot repo links were touched up as well even if they do redirect properly. This shouldn't affect anything as these are documentation link changes only. |

Remove superflous parameter overseer_enable_anyways and make parachain node type more explicit (#7617)
* Remove superflous parameter `overseer_enable_anyways` We don't need this flag, as we don't need the overseer enabled when the node isn't a collator or validator. * Rename `IsCollator` to `IsParachainNode` `IsParachainNode` is more expressive and also encapsulates the state of the parachain node being a full node. Some functionality like the overseer needs to run always when the node runs alongside a parachain node. The parachain node needs the overseer to e.g. recover PoVs. Other things like candidate validation or pvf checking are only required for when the node is running as validator. * FMT * Fix CI |

metrics: Increase the resolution of histogram metrics (#7335)
* metrics: Increase the resolution of histogram metrics
These metrics are using the default histogram buckets:
```
pub const DEFAULT_BUCKETS: &[f64; 11] = &[
0.005, 0.01, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0,
];
```
Which give us a resolution of 5ms, that's good, but there are some subsystems
where we process hundreds or even a few thousands of messages per second like
approval-voting or approval-distribution, so it makes sense to increse the
resoution of the bucket to better understand if the procesisng is in the range
of useconds.
The new bucket ranges will be:
```
[0.0001, 0.0004, 0.0016, 0.0064, 0.0256, 0.1024, 0.4096, 1.6384, 6.5536]
Reduce dispute coordinator load (#5785)
* Don't import backing statements directly into the dispute coordinator. This also gets rid of a redundant signature check. Both should have some impact on backing performance. In general this PR should make us scale better in the number of parachains. Reasoning (aka why this is fine): For the signature check: As mentioned, it is a redundant check. The signature has already been checked at this point. This is even made obvious by the used types. The smart constructor is not perfect as discussed [here](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot/issues/3455), but is still a reasonable security. For not importing to the dispute-coordinator: This should be good as the dispute coordinator does scrape backing votes from chain. This suffices in practice as a super majority of validators must have seen a backing fork in order for a candidate to get included and only included candidates pose a threat to our system. The import from chain is preferable over direct import of backing votes for two reasons: 1. The import is batched, greatly improving import performance. All backing votes for a candidate are imported with a single import. And indeed we were able to see in metrics that importing votes from chain is fast. 2. We do less work in general as not every candidate for which statements are gossiped might actually make it on a chain. The dispute coordinator as with the current implementation would still import and keep those votes around for six sessions. While redundancy is good for reliability in the event of bugs, this also comes at a non negligible cost. The dispute-coordinator right now is the subsystem with the highest load, despite the fact that it should not be doing much during mormal operation and it is only getting worse with more parachains as the load is a direct function of the number of statements. We'll see on Versi how much of a performance improvement this PR * Get rid of dead code. * Dont send approval vote * Make it pass CI * Bring back tests for fixing them later. * Explicit signature check. * Resurrect approval-voting tests (not fixed yet) * Send out approval votes in dispute-distribution. Use BTreeMap for ordered dispute votes. * Bring back an important warning. * Fix approval voting tests. * Don't send out dispute message on import + test + Some cleanup. * Guide changes. Note that the introduced complexity is actually redundant. * WIP: guide changes. * Finish guide changes about dispute-coordinator conceputally. Requires more proof read still. Also removed obsolete implementation details, where the code is better suited as the source of truth. * Finish guide changes for now. * Remove own approval vote import logic. * Implement logic for retrieving approval-votes into approval-voting and approval-distribution subsystems. * Update roadmap/implementers-guide/src/node/disputes/dispute-coordinator.md Co-authored-by: asynchronous rob <rphmeier@gmail.com> * Review feedback. In particular: Add note about disputes of non included candidates. * Incorporate Review Remarks * Get rid of superfluous space. * Tidy up import logic a bit. Logical vote import is now separated, making the code more readable and maintainable. Also: Accept import if there is at least one invalid signer that has not exceeded its spam slots, instead of requiring all of them to not exceed their limits. This is more correct and a preparation for vote batching. * We don't need/have empty imports. * Fix tests and bugs. * Remove error prone redundancy. * Import approval votes on dispute initiated/concluded. * Add test for approval vote import. * Make guide checker happy (hopefully) * Another sanity check + better logs. * Reasoning about boundedness. * Use `CandidateIndex` as opposed to `CoreIndex`. * Remove redundant import. * Review remarks. * Add metric for calls to request signatures * More review remarks. * Add metric on imported approval votes. * Include candidate hash in logs. * More trace log * Break cycle. * Add some tracing. * Cleanup allowed messages. * fmt * Tracing + timeout for get inherent data. * Better error. * Break cycle in all places. * Clarified comment some more. * Typo. * Break cycle approval-distribution - approval-voting.
