Lift dependencies to the workspace (Part 2/x) (#3366)
Lifting some more dependencies to the workspace. Just using the most-often updated ones for now. [frame] #[pallet::composite_enum] improved variant count handling + removed pallet_balances's MaxHolds config (#2657)
I started this investigation/issue based on @liamaharon question [here](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/1801#discussion_r1410452499). ## Problem The `pallet_balances` integrity test should correctly detect that the runtime has correct distinct `HoldReasons` variant count. I assume the same situation exists for RuntimeFreezeReason. It is not a critical problem, if we set `MaxHolds` with a sufficiently large value, everything should be ok. However, in this case, the integrity_test check becomes less useful. **Situation for "any" runtime:** - `HoldReason` enums from different pallets: ```rust /// from pallet_nis #[pallet::composite_enum] pub enum HoldReason { NftReceipt, } /// from pallet_preimage #[pallet::composite_enum] pub enum HoldReason { Preimage, } // from pallet_state-trie-migration #[pallet::composite_enum] pub enum HoldReason { SlashForContinueMigrate, SlashForMigrateCustomTop, SlashForMigrateCustomChild, } ``` - generated `RuntimeHoldReason` enum looks like: ```rust pub enum RuntimeHoldReason { #[codec(index = 32u8)] Preimage(pallet_preimage::HoldReason), #[codec(index = 38u8)] Nis(pallet_nis::HoldReason), #[codec(index = 42u8)] StateTrieMigration(pallet_state_trie_migration::HoldReason), } ``` - composite enum `RuntimeHoldReason` variant count is detected as `3` - we set `type MaxHolds = ConstU32<3>` - `pallet_balances::integrity_test` is ok with `3`(at least 3) However, the real problem can occur in a live runtime where some functionality might stop working. This expansion generates the `VariantCount` implementation for pallets' `HoldReason`, `FreezeReason`, `LockId`, and `SlashReason`. Enum variants must be plain enum values without fields to ensure a deterministic count. The composite runtime enum, `RuntimeHoldReason` and `RuntimeFreezeReason`, now sets `VariantCount::VARIANT_COUNT` as the sum of pallets' enum `VariantCount::VARIANT_COUNT`: ```rust #[frame_support::pallet(dev_mode)] mod module_single_instance { #[pallet::composite_enum] pub enum HoldReason { ModuleSingleInstanceReason1, ModuleSingleInstanceReason2, } ... } #[frame_support::pallet(dev_mode)] mod module_multi_instance { #[pallet::composite_enum] pub enum HoldReason<I: 'static = ()> { ModuleMultiInstanceReason1, ModuleMultiInstanceReason2, ModuleMultiInstanceReason3, } ... } impl self::sp_api_hidden_includes_construct_runtime::hidden_include::traits::VariantCount for RuntimeHoldReason { const VARIANT_COUNT: u32 = 0 + module_single_instance::HoldReason::VARIANT_COUNT + module_multi_instance::HoldReason::<module_multi_instance::Instance1>::VARIANT_COUNT + module_multi_instance::HoldReason::<module_multi_instance::Instance2>::VARIANT_COUNT + module_multi_instance::HoldReason::<module_multi_instance::Instance3>::VARIANT_COUNT; } ``` In addition, `MaxHolds` is removed (as suggested [here](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/2657#discussion_r1443324573)) from `pallet_balances`, and its `Holds` are now bounded to `RuntimeHoldReason::VARIANT_COUNT`. rpc: backpressured RPC server (bump jsonrpsee 0.20) (#1313)
This is a rather big change in jsonrpsee, the major things in this bump are: - Server backpressure (the subscription impls are modified to deal with that) - Allow custom error types / return types (remove jsonrpsee::core::Error and jsonrpee::core::CallError) - Bug fixes (graceful shutdown in particular not used by substrate anyway) - Less dependencies for the clients in particular - Return type requires Clone in method call responses - Moved to tokio channels - Async subscription API (not used in this PR) Major changes in this PR: - The subscriptions are now bounded and if subscription can't keep up with the server it is dropped - CLI: add parameter to configure the jsonrpc server bounded message buffer (default is 64) - Add our own subscription helper to deal with the unbounded streams in substrate The most important things in this PR to review is the added helpers functions in `substrate/client/rpc/src/utils.rs` and the rest is pretty much chore. Regarding the "bounded buffer limit" it may cause the server to handle the JSON-RPC calls slower than before. The message size limit is bounded by "--rpc-response-size" thus "by default 10MB * 64 = 640MB" but the subscription message size is not covered by this limit and could be capped as well. Extract PartialComponents into a type alias (#2767)
Pulling PartialComponents into a named `Service` type stops clippy complaining about type complexity and also makes the type signatures a little less scary to read. There's two instances where we can't pull it out into a type because a nightly feature has not yet been stabilised (E.g. the `imp Fn` isn't stabilised in a type alias context here: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/d84e135bbfc366a17bb6b72d0fc9d09ee781ab8d/polkadot/node/service/src/lib.rs#L477 ). --------- Co-authored-by: Bastian Köcher <git@kchr.de> |

Set clippy lints in workspace (requires rust 1.74) (#2390)
We currently use a bit of a hack in `.cargo/config` to make sure that clippy isn't too annoying by specifying the list of lints. There is now a stable way to define lints for a workspace. The only down side is that every crate seems to have to opt into this so there's a *few* files modified in this PR. Enforce consistent and correct toml formatting (#2518)
Using taplo, fixes all our broken and inconsistent toml formatting and adds CI to keep them tidy. If people want we can customise the format rules as described here https://taplo.tamasfe.dev/configuration/formatter-options.html @ggwpez, I suggest zepter is used only for checking features are propagated, and leave formatting for taplo to avoid duplicate work and conflicts. Rework the event system of sc-network (#1370)
This commit introduces a new concept called `NotificationService` which allows Polkadot protocols to communicate with the underlying notification protocol implementation directly, without routing events through `NetworkWorker`. This implies that each protocol has its own service which it uses to communicate with remote peers and that each `NotificationService` is unique with respect to the underlying notification protocol, meaning `NotificationService` for the transaction protocol can only be used to send and receive transaction-related notifications. The `NotificationService` concept introduces two additional benefits: * allow protocols to start using custom handshakes * allow protocols to accept/reject inbound peers Previously the validation of inbound connections was solely the responsibility of `ProtocolController`. This caused issues with light peers and `SyncingEngine` as `ProtocolController` would accept more peers than `SyncingEngine` could accept which caused peers to have differing views of their own states. `SyncingEngine` would reject excess peers but these rejections were not properly communicated to those peers causing them to assume that they were accepted. With `NotificationService`, the local handshake is not sent to remote peer if peer is rejected which allows it to detect that it was rejected. This commit also deprecates the use of `NetworkEventStream` for all notification-related events and going forward only DHT events are provided through `NetworkEventStream`. If protocols wish to follow each other's events, they must introduce additional abtractions, as is done for GRANDPA and transactions protocols by following the syncing protocol through `SyncEventStream`. Fixes import path in benchmark macro (#2437)

TryDecodeEntireState check for storage types and pallets (#1805)
### This PR is a port of this [PR for substrate](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/pull/13013) by @kianenigma Add infrastructure needed to have a Pallet::decode_entire_state(), which makes sure all "typed" storage items defined in the pallet are decode-able. This is not enforced in any way at the moment. Teams who wish to integrate/use this in the try-runtime feature flag should add frame_support::storage::migration::EnsureStateDecodes as the LAST ITEM of the runtime's custom migrations, and pass it to frame-executive. This will make it usable in try-runtime on-runtime-upgrade. A similar check has been added for `MaxHolds` against `RuntimeHoldReasons`, which is already given to `pallet_balances`. In all contexts, you should pass the real `RuntimeFreezeReasons` generated by `construct_runtime` to `type RuntimeFreezeReasons`. xcm: Change TypeInfo::path to not include staging (#1948)
The `xcm` crate was renamed to `staging-xcm` to be able to publish it to crates.io as someone as squatted `xcm`. The problem with this rename is that the `TypeInfo` includes the crate name which ultimately lands in the metadata. The metadata is consumed by downstream users like `polkadot-js` or people building on top of `polkadot-js`. These people are using the entire `path` to find the type in the type registry. Thus, their code would break as the type path would now be [`staging_xcm`, `VersionedXcm`] instead of [`xcm`, `VersionedXcm`]. This pull request fixes this by renaming the path segment `staging_xcm` to `xcm`. Use correct target dir in polkadot readme (#1643)
Closes #1372 This fixes the target directories in the polkadot readme. I verified manually the Ubuntu based install works on a fresh cloud machine. Build from source also worked as described. Since #1304 landed `--dev` also works again (not on v1.1.0 though), so I would consider the install instructions fixed. |

Modular block request handler (#1524)
Submit the outstanding PRs from the old repos(these were already reviewed and approved before the repo rorg, but not yet submitted): Main PR: https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/pull/14014 Companion PRs: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot/pull/7134, https://github.com/paritytech/cumulus/pull/2489 The changes in the PR: 1. ChainSync currently calls into the block request handler directly. Instead, move the block request handler behind a trait. This allows new protocols to be plugged into ChainSync. 2. BuildNetworkParams is changed so that custom relay protocol implementations can be (optionally) passed in during network creation time. If custom protocol is not specified, it defaults to the existing block handler 3. BlockServer and BlockDownloader traits are introduced for the protocol implementation. The existing block handler has been changed to implement these traits 4. Other changes: [X] Make TxHash serializable.
