rpc server: make possible to disable/enable batch requests (#3364)
The rationale behind this, is that it may be useful for some users actually disable RPC batch requests or limit them by length instead of the total size bytes of the batch. This PR adds two new CLI options: ``` --rpc-disable-batch-requests - disable batch requests on the server --rpc-max-batch-request-len <LEN> - limit batches to LEN on the server. ``` |

Lift dependencies to the workspace (Part 2/x) (#3366)
Lifting some more dependencies to the workspace. Just using the most-often updated ones for now. Lift dependencies to the workspace (Part 1) (#2070)
Changes (partial https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/994): - Set log to `0.4.20` everywhere - Lift `log` to the workspace Starting with a simpler one after seeing https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/2065 from @jsdw. This sets the `default-features` to `false` in the root and then overwrites that in each create to its original value. This is necessary since otherwise the `default` features are additive and its impossible to disable them in the crate again once they are enabled in the workspace. rpc: backpressured RPC server (bump jsonrpsee 0.20) (#1313)
This is a rather big change in jsonrpsee, the major things in this bump are: - Server backpressure (the subscription impls are modified to deal with that) - Allow custom error types / return types (remove jsonrpsee::core::Error and jsonrpee::core::CallError) - Bug fixes (graceful shutdown in particular not used by substrate anyway) - Less dependencies for the clients in particular - Return type requires Clone in method call responses - Moved to tokio channels - Async subscription API (not used in this PR) Major changes in this PR: - The subscriptions are now bounded and if subscription can't keep up with the server it is dropped - CLI: add parameter to configure the jsonrpc server bounded message buffer (default is 64) - Add our own subscription helper to deal with the unbounded streams in substrate The most important things in this PR to review is the added helpers functions in `substrate/client/rpc/src/utils.rs` and the rest is pretty much chore. Regarding the "bounded buffer limit" it may cause the server to handle the JSON-RPC calls slower than before. The message size limit is bounded by "--rpc-response-size" thus "by default 10MB * 64 = 640MB" but the subscription message size is not covered by this limit and could be capped as well. Move cryptographic hashing procedures to crypto folder. (#2306)
Step towards https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/1975 As reported https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/1975#issuecomment-1774534225 I'd like to encapsulate crypto related stuff in a dedicated folder. Currently all cryptographic primitive wrappers are all sparsed in `substrate/core` which contains "misc core" stuff. To simplify the process, as the first step with this PR I propose to move the cryptographic hashing there. The `substrate/crypto` folder was already created to contains `ec-utils` crate. Notes: - rename `sp-core-hashing` to `sp-crypto-hashing` - rename `sp-core-hashing-proc-macro` to `sp-crypto-hashing-proc-macro` - As the crates name is changed I took the freedom to restart fresh from version 0.1.0 for both crates --------- Co-authored-by: Robert Hambrock <roberthambrock@gmail.com> |

Extract warp sync strategy from ChainSync (#2467)
Extract `WarpSync` (and `StateSync` as part of warp sync) from `ChainSync` as independent syncing strategy called by `SyncingEngine`. Introduce `SyncingStrategy` enum as a proxy between `SyncingEngine` and specific syncing strategies. ## Limitations Gap sync is kept in `ChainSync` for now because it shares the same set of peers as block syncing implementation in `ChainSync`. Extraction of a common context responsible for peer management in syncing strategies able to run in parallel is planned for a follow-up PR. ## Further improvements A possibility of conversion of `SyncingStartegy` into a trait should be evaluated. The main stopper for this is that different strategies need to communicate different actions to `SyncingEngine` and respond to different events / provide different APIs (e.g., requesting justifications is only possible via `ChainSync` and not through `WarpSync`; `SendWarpProofRequest` action is only relevant to `WarpSync`, etc.) --------- Co-authored-by: Aaro Altonen <48052676+altonen@users.noreply.github.com> |

Cumulus test service cleanup (#2887)
closes #2567 Followup for https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/2331 This PR contains multiple internal cleanups: 1. This gets rid of the functionality in `generate_genesis_block` which was only used in one benchmark 2. Fixed `transaction_pool` and `transaction_throughput` benchmarks failing since they require a tokio runtime now. 3. Removed `parachain_id` CLI option from the test parachain 4. Removed `expect` call from `RuntimeResolver` |

Improve storage monitor API (#2899)
This removes the need to unnecessarily provide a very specific data structure `DatabaseSource` and removes huge `sc-client-db` dependency from storage monitor. It is now possible to use storage monitor with any path. P.S. I still strongly dislike that it pulls `clap` dependency for such a small feature, but many other crates do as well, so nothing special here. |

Set clippy lints in workspace (requires rust 1.74) (#2390)
We currently use a bit of a hack in `.cargo/config` to make sure that clippy isn't too annoying by specifying the list of lints. There is now a stable way to define lints for a workspace. The only down side is that every crate seems to have to opt into this so there's a *few* files modified in this PR. Enforce consistent and correct toml formatting (#2518)
Using taplo, fixes all our broken and inconsistent toml formatting and adds CI to keep them tidy. If people want we can customise the format rules as described here https://taplo.tamasfe.dev/configuration/formatter-options.html @ggwpez, I suggest zepter is used only for checking features are propagated, and leave formatting for taplo to avoid duplicate work and conflicts. Improve CodeExecutor (#2358)
Since `sp-state-machine` and `GenesisConfigBuilderRuntimeCaller` always set `use_native` to be false. We should remove this param and make `NativeElseWasmExecutor` behave like its name. It could make the above components use the correct execution strategy. Maybe polkadot do not need about `NativeElseWasmExecutor` anymore. Rework the event system of sc-network (#1370)
This commit introduces a new concept called `NotificationService` which allows Polkadot protocols to communicate with the underlying notification protocol implementation directly, without routing events through `NetworkWorker`. This implies that each protocol has its own service which it uses to communicate with remote peers and that each `NotificationService` is unique with respect to the underlying notification protocol, meaning `NotificationService` for the transaction protocol can only be used to send and receive transaction-related notifications. The `NotificationService` concept introduces two additional benefits: * allow protocols to start using custom handshakes * allow protocols to accept/reject inbound peers Previously the validation of inbound connections was solely the responsibility of `ProtocolController`. This caused issues with light peers and `SyncingEngine` as `ProtocolController` would accept more peers than `SyncingEngine` could accept which caused peers to have differing views of their own states. `SyncingEngine` would reject excess peers but these rejections were not properly communicated to those peers causing them to assume that they were accepted. With `NotificationService`, the local handshake is not sent to remote peer if peer is rejected which allows it to detect that it was rejected. This commit also deprecates the use of `NetworkEventStream` for all notification-related events and going forward only DHT events are provided through `NetworkEventStream`. If protocols wish to follow each other's events, they must introduce additional abtractions, as is done for GRANDPA and transactions protocols by following the syncing protocol through `SyncEventStream`. An attribute `pallet::feeless_if` that can be optionally attached to a call like so: ```rust #[pallet::feeless_if(|_origin: &OriginFor<T>, something: &u32| -> bool { *something == 0 })] pub fn do_something(origin: OriginFor<T>, something: u32) -> DispatchResult { .... } ``` The closure passed accepts references to arguments as specified in the call fn. It returns a boolean that denotes the conditions required for this call to be "feeless". 2. A signed extension `SkipCheckIfFeeless<T: SignedExtension>` that wraps a transaction payment processor such as `pallet_transaction_payment::ChargeTransactionPayment`. It checks for all calls annotated with `pallet::feeless_if` to see if the conditions are met. If so, the wrapped signed extension is not called, essentially making the call feeless. This PR prepares chains specs for _native-runtime-free_ world. This PR has following changes: - `substrate`: - adds support for: - JSON based `GenesisConfig` to `ChainSpec` allowing interaction with runtime `GenesisBuilder` API. - interacting with arbitrary runtime wasm blob to[ `chain-spec-builder`](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/blob/3ef576eaeb3f42610e85daecc464961cf1295570/bin/utils/chain-spec-builder/src/lib.rs#L46) command line util, - removes [`code`](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/blob/3ef576eaeb3f42610e85daecc464961cf1295570/frame/system/src/lib.rs#L660) from `system_pallet` - adds `code` to the `ChainSpec` - deprecates [`ChainSpec::from_genesis`](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/blob/3ef576eaeb3f42610e85daecc464961cf1295570/client/chain-spec/src/chain_spec.rs#L263), but also changes the signature of this method extending it with `code` argument. sc-block-builder: Remove BlockBuilderProvider (#2099)
The `BlockBuilderProvider` was a trait that was defined in `sc-block-builder`. The trait was implemented for `Client`. This basically meant that you needed to import `sc-block-builder` any way to have access to the block builder. So, this trait was not providing any real value. This pull request is removing the said trait. Instead of the trait it introduces a builder for creating a `BlockBuilder`. The builder currently has the quite fabulous name `BlockBuilderBuilder` (I'm open to any better name 😅). The rest of the pull request is about replacing the old trait with the new builder. # Downstream code changes If you used `new_block` or `new_block_at` before you now need to switch it over to the new `BlockBuilderBuilder` pattern: ```rust // `new` requires a type that implements `CallApiAt`. let mut block_builder = BlockBuilderBuilder::new(client) // Then you need to specify the hash of the parent block the block will be build on top of .on_parent_block(at) // The block builder also needs the block number of the parent block. // Here it is fetched from the given `client` using the `HeaderBackend` // However, there also exists `with_parent_block_number` for directly passing the number .fetch_parent_block_number(client) .unwrap() // Enable proof recording if required. The check_hardware functions does not give us too much information as to what is failing, so let's return the list of failed metrics, so that callers can print it. Mixnet integration (#1346)
See #1345, <https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/pull/14207>. This adds all the necessary mixnet components, and puts them together in the "kitchen-sink" node/runtime. The components added are: - A pallet (`frame/mixnet`). This is responsible for determining the current mixnet session and phase, and the mixnodes to use in each session. It provides a function that validators can call to register a mixnode for the next session. The logic of this pallet is very similar to that of the `im-online` pallet. - A service (`client/mixnet`). This implements the core mixnet logic, building on the `mixnet` crate. The service communicates with other nodes using notifications sent over the "mixnet" protocol. - An RPC interface. Modular block request handler (#1524)
Submit the outstanding PRs from the old repos(these were already reviewed and approved before the repo rorg, but not yet submitted): Main PR: https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/pull/14014 Companion PRs: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot/pull/7134, https://github.com/paritytech/cumulus/pull/2489 The changes in the PR: 1. ChainSync currently calls into the block request handler directly. Instead, move the block request handler behind a trait. This allows new protocols to be plugged into ChainSync. 2. BuildNetworkParams is changed so that custom relay protocol implementations can be (optionally) passed in during network creation time. If custom protocol is not specified, it defaults to the existing block handler 3. BlockServer and BlockDownloader traits are introduced for the protocol implementation. The existing block handler has been changed to implement these traits 4. Other changes: [X] Make TxHash serializable.
